Enh, all the art I've seen has looked pretty damn nice, but whatever does it for you, anon.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really hate her or anything, but yeah I don't personally think she's as great of a character as a lot of people think (she reminds me a little of Jubilee, who I also find really annoying but she's not AS bad as Jubilee...not that many characters are). Still, I'm glad she exists though and that people have been able to identify with ehr

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Jubilee is the best character ever, so whatever.

Aw, I LIKE Jubilee, in all her annoying mall rat glory! I liked her better than Kitty anyway, who I never quite understood the appeal of.

So ignore it, instead of being angry about it being too popular

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
But...but...people like things that they *don't*. How do you expect them to sleep at night?

you don't understand how comics work, do you?

if the company wants to push a character enough or they reach a certain popularity, the company will shove them everywhere. they'll guest star, take up space in events, and generally become harder and harder to ignore.

and then there's the fact that if they're making one thing, its taking up resources and talent and thus not making other things someone else might like.

I wouldn't bother to assume you're racist, I'd just assume you have bad taste in comics.

I fel "meh" about her - but then to be fair,I haven't really read up much on her. And if I'm honest I also though Captain America was boring before I read up on it more.

The first few versions of any "minority" main character are usually pretty meh. The Authors are more concerned with making sure that their special snowflake is a perfect reflection of the minority and less concerned with making them an interesting person.

Okay so I'm way behind on this, but I don't feel the 'insufferably annoying' thing. Granted that is highly subjective, but I find her personality both endearing and relatable.

That said, if you don't like her you don't like her.

But I think the art in this series is fantastic too (almost good enough to read just for the pretty), so we clearly have extremely different tastes.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
I like this series, but the art is definitely a bit off-the-wall. And the series moves pretty slowly too. I'm willing to put up with it because it's not completely horrible, I want to support female characters, I generally like female characters and want to read them, and the stuff with her expat/immigrant family is interesting. And sometimes the writer and artist do something visually interesting.

But I prefer the art in Captain Marvel, mostly.

So I think you're being totally reasonable.

I like her but I wouldn't assume that anyone who doesn't like her is racist/sexist, I'd think that she just isn't for them.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
man i REALLY like the art. i think its expressive and interesting. I feel like the Big 2 are always too cautious and dull with what they think the "right" way to draw is. I love this art and Tradd Moore's I hope they keep pushing the different looks for different books.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
I like her, but I can see why a lot of people don't. Not only is she a teenager who writes fanfic, but she's also weirdly peppy at times and that grates on the nerves. Ascended Fangirl characters are hard to pull off.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
My reaction when I finally read her book was "okay, character of color sneaks out at night from overprotective family to meet up with the 'bad' kids down by the water, mysterious gas envelops everyone, character develops superpowers, tells nobody but white male best friend who is a tech genius and has an obvious crush on them, the two of them spend all their time hanging out at a convenience store and training to defeat villains" - that is Static Shock. That is literally Static Shock.

I mean I liked it all right. But not sure where people are getting that it's so UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT AND NEW. It's a fun, solid, traditional comic about a new young super, which does cool stuff with race and identity. And I like what they're doing with her religious/ethnic/racial identity (which is definitely different from Virgil's story, as it would have to be.) But the basic setup is not exactly new. (If anything it's just demonstrating how short we are on fun, solid comics about young heroes right now...)

Lots of people hate my favourite characters and I don't think that usually* makes them racist/sexist/whatvever. Just WRONG!

*Occasionally someone doesn't like one of my favourites for racist or sexist reasons but it's pretty obvious.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah the art is not my favorite but I like the character and story okay so far (I admit to being way behind, I read these on the Marvel Unlimited app so I've only got the first four or five issues).

I don't read Marvel but the new Miss Marvel is exactly what the comics industry needs. That they've revamped Batgirl to emulate it has been a major boon for DC's lineup as a whole.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not anywhere as extreme as you are, OP, since I find both the art and the character to be fine, but that title is just not for me. I don't think there's anything wrong with Kamala, but I'm clearly not the target audience, and all the meme and tumblr references reinforce that.

Text: I find this character and her book to be incredibly boring. The character comes off as insufferably annoying and the art in the book feels washed out and badly done.

Her being an Inhuman only makes her more boring. My fandom friends never stop raving about how “perfect” and “amazing she is though.

s!b: Saying anything negative about this character brings out the “OMG YOU ONLY HATE HER BECAUSE YOU’RE SEXST/RACIST!” crowd.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
She's a Muslim teenage girl who writes fan fiction, squees a lot and quotes Internet memes about 'doge'. They couldn't be more tumblr pandering unless sexy teen Loki showed up... Oh wait.

Everything else about the character and her series aside, I agree about the art. It feels overly cartoony and the coloring looks like it's fading out. I can read her in other books but her own series' art just ruins it for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I get what you mean, OP. I was psyched to read it before it came out but when I read it, it was so boring and paint by numbers. It doesn't help that all the young superheroes I've read lately are practically carbon copies ("Boy do I 'geek out' over superheroes! Now I have superpowers but, bummer, great responsibility!") I wish that one of them could be an asshole who learns from their mistakes or a coward who has to become strong or shallow and change their ways. But they're always dull clones and I'm sorry to say that Kamala is just one of the clone brood.
