partly I blame the fact that she has another book supposedly coming out this February for a new series. partly, as the series went on (and on and on) it became really clear to me as a reader that she was doing this by the seat of her pants without any sort of outline. And as much as I loved the concept and initially loved the characters, I just couldn't love the way she ended up pairing them together, and Jenks who was the best character by far was my "Man, I wish he'd been the main character instead" wish.

I think the series would have been a whole lot better off it had stuck to the initial concept of "two kick ass supernatural women solving crime" instead of becoming "the fucked up life of main character who cannot learn from her mistakes ever."

OP (and continued spoilers)

Jenks was my favorite, too! As a whole, I was more disappointed with where she went with Ivy's character arc than with Rachel's. I was totally buying into the whole "Rachel comes of age, while simultaneously reordering society as we know it" thing... and then we got a half-assed resolution that kind of touched on most of the plot threads + weddings and babies. Sigh.

To save me from reading this book and since Ivy was my favorite character, what happened with her?

Okay, so the last book is convoluted as hell and Ivy's personal plotline is also tied into the main(ish) plot of the book. So, in addition to spoilers, this will probably sound like so much rambling. Ivy's still with Nina, who winds up undead and Ivy becomes her scion. Rachel figures out how to give the undead vampires their souls back, but because they're dead, giving them their souls makes them go crazy and kill themselves. So, Al figures out that they can put the souls into the scions instead and everyone will be happy (for some reason). So, at the end of the book, Ivy's still alive and with Nina and hosting Nina's soul. In combination with the lack of development of Nina's character beyond someone for Ivy to save, I think this ramps Ivy's "need to be needed" up to pathological levels. Obviously, this is straying into YMMV territory.

Wow, that's...pretty bad. I mean, I was really hoping Ivy would keep her soul after death, but how does this even work? What happens when Ivy dies? And is Nina's soul just chillin' in there with Ivy's now? HOW DOES THIS WORK. And yes, right there with you on the "need to be needed" thing, that is so messed up on so many levels. Way to take this lady who was trying so hard to be independent and turn her entire life into one revolving around one single, solitary person, Harrison. Exactly what you said Ivy didn't want.

Thank you for filling me in!

Fully agreed. I enjoyed the first few books a lot, but around the seventh or so things just started falling apart. Plot holes, poor (and straight up bad) character development, Trent, and it just all around seemed like she lost sight of her own series.

I bought the previous book (not this last one) and didn't finish it. Sad, since I've been reading them since the first book came out. Maybe one day I'll finish, but...
