Fandom things you can't get into

Fic, shipping, roleplay, collecting, and cosplay are the major ones, but there's actually a fair amount of fandom stuff I don't care for at all.

Shipping as the main course, if you will.

Also, I used to be into roleplaying, but so many bad experiences have turned me off of it. I had great ones too, so I'm not knocking in completely, but I have less time now so it's not worth risking another bad run of it.

This. I enjoy the occasional shippy moment or fic but it's not my sole existence in fandom and I get tired of the focus on it because it seems to exclude everything else.

Role-playing

But especially this: any fic where it's Character x Reader

It's just SO BAD

And, I know this sounds awful, but I judge the people who write it...

As a person who was into this (and occasionally), what do you usually think of these people, those people who read/write Character/Reader fic? (read this in a non confrontational voice. I'm just curious!)

Re: Fandom things you can't get into

Whenever I see a fic labeled Character/Reader, I basically have the same reaction as I do blatant Mary Sue fic (except in this case the author isn't even trying to disguise it).

It's just so weird to me. Like…you have these amazing characters, why are you throwing yourself in the mix?

I guess I just see it as something I would figure only young writers would do.

I know it's mean, but I just have a visceral reaction against Character/Reader fic. It's not for me. (I hope I didn't offend you, it's just tough to describe me feelings about it without sounding patronizing and elitist as hell).

No worries, I'm not offended at all (I did happen to write more of it when I was younger. Looking back, that possibly some of the worst fic I ever wrote, lol. It's really embarrassing actually). Sometimes the reason I would write it was because I always (at one point or another) think about what my reaction would be in a similar situation, with that particular character (or with a person of similar attitude), and the story went on from there. These days, I tend to write crossovers, in-canon characters, and some OCs (which are not intended to be reader self inserts).

I don't feel like it's patronizing, to be honest. Everyone has their own likes and dislikes in reading fic. And some folks just react more strongly to it (I don't read slash, but I don't feel any particular way about those who write it and read it. Others have very particular opinions of it.

Urgh, I follow a Classic Who fanart group on dA and someone keeps posting these [Various Doctors]/Reader [at various life stages- child, teen, elderly] stories to it.

I don't read fic on dA at all (maybe if I had a very strong recommendation of one), but they're almost the only person who posts fic to this group. There's a few other stray ones, but this writer does it regularly. I delete them from my notifications the second I see it.

I cannot stand those Character x Reader fics. It is especially annoying because authors seem to post like 8 at once.

Re: Fandom things you can't get into - canon ships

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-01-17 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't ship anyone who's explicitly in a relationship in a canon. Like, Holmes and Watson don't actually date.

Most of it, tbh.

Roleplay, cosplay, collecting stuff. Cons in general. Videogames, anime, comicbooks. Obsessing over actors and characters.

I'm... not really a fannish person. The most I do is write fanfic.

Most WAFFy slice-of-life short fics. I can sometimes get into WAFFy romance short fics, but I usually need a little more substance for slice-of-life.

Role-playing. I was only able to get into one RPing game, but otherwise that was it. I just can't wrap my brain around RPing established characters... original/fan characters, sure (but I don't RP my Old Republic toons with others. I just RP how I pick choices, et al), but characters I know from other series not so much.

Reader/X Character insert fics. Something about them hits my second-hand embarrassment squick button pretty hard.

Fan fic, believe it or not. I stopped reading it altogether a few years back for one reason or another, barring stories written by close friends. I'm not sure why or if I'd be able to explain why I don't read fan fic anymore. Maybe because 3/4ths of the fic I've come across at random are OOC/In Name Only AU stories that would be better served as original stories with the serial numbers filed off, I dunno. I also tried writing it myself and oh wow, did I write some awful, awful fan fic. I knew I wasn't cut out for it (and I couldn't find a beta no matter how often I'd ask), so I stopped writing it several fandoms ago. XP

Roleplaying. I like the idea of it and I've had friends hold my hand through the process of dipping my toes into it, but I just can't get into it no matter what I do or what character I play. I always end up feeling so self-conscious and embarrassed the whole time.

tabletop RP. and I say this as a fandom RPer (here on DW)

I genuinely can't put my finger on why, but there's just something about creating character sheets and devising an imaginary personality and then pretending to be it in front of real people while rolling dice that I just can't get into.

but give me a journal/forum RP and my favorite fandom character to write and I'm good.

Heh. I'm the exact opposite, myself. Love some tabletop RP, but journal/forum RP does nothing for me. Different strokes. :)

I feel the exact same way.

Anything sexual with underage characters.

I don't understand all the AU fic with "character A is a young student and character B is an adult teacher".

I understand it's a fetish I guess, I will just never think it's okay.
It's really different from reading "Characters A and B are consenting adults who sometimes enjoy roleplay of a student/teacher relationship"

A million times worse when it's elementary school age student / adult.

Coffeeshop AUs, Nanny AUs, Hot Neighbor AUs, basically all the cutesy, rom-com-y stuff. I love shipping, but I think rom-com tropes are the worst, so I don't want to see them in fanworks, too. I overall prefer canon-based to AU, but stuff like 30's gangland or survival horror or somesuch are at least interesting to me.
