Well, I'm a dumbass who never learned his lesson, but I do have a story of something I SHOULDN'T have listened to alone at night!

Okay, so this was during the shitty year of Unstable Housing, which is a euphemism for, "I was living in a crawl space filled with rusty nails and rotten fiberglass." It was very small (no standing up), and had no windows or ambient light, which meant that once you shut the door, it was PITCH black. I had to keep a hand-crank flashlight in there with me.

As an aside, I am deaf in one ear. This means I have no directional hearing; I can not tell where a noise is coming from. Why is this relevant? Read on, anon.

I like watching Let's Plays of horror games. The scarier, the better. And because I am dumber than a box of rocks, I decided to watch Corpse Party before going to bed in my miserable hole.

This was a poor life decision.

So here I am, sleeping on my miserable mattress in my pitch black hole of horrors. I have JUST ABOUT persuaded myself that nothing terrible is going to happen to me when--

CRASH!

I didn't know what it was. I didn't know WHERE it was. It was just big, and heavy, and sounded WAY TOO CLOSE TO MY FUCKING HEAD OH GOD.

I freaked out, fled my hole, and spent that night on the couch blubbering like a small child. It was just my box of art supplies, falling off the heating pipe I was using as an impromptu shelf, but it succeeded in scaring the living shits out of me.

And that's why, when I'm stupid enough to watch horror games at night, I make sure to go to bed listening to mariachi or old swing music. Because NOTHING can make that creepy.

(By the way, if anyone wants to recommend me a scary game to watch, go for it.)

OP

I've been tempted to do something like that (watch walk throughs of scary games) but I'm usually too much of a punk. Might do it this time around...

Well, if you like, I can maybe try and recommend you something that's more mild? I mean, I LOATHE jump scares and gore, so I'm more of a psychological horror kinda person. If there are certain aspects you want to avoid, I can try and help you out!

I ant to ask for more, but shouldn't be doing that...BUT...I don't like gore, I'm good with jump scares, into the psychological thriller type of deal, where the story remains unfinished, or you never actually see what's coming after you. Actually. Forget I wrote all of that. What do you watch to shake the scare off (besides listening to Mariachi and swing)?

Honestly, mariachi and swing are the best terror cures I've ever had. It also helps that I share a bed with my husband, who is accustomed to me waking up from nightmares and blathering total nonsense at him while he reassures me that no, nobody's trying to eat me, the house is not on fire, and everything's okay.

Taking a break after a scary game to interact with other humans and remind myself of reality also helps. The key is to just jog your brain to ground itself in reality. (Disney movies don't hurt either.)

This game is fucking petrifying, so I would not try it without care, but Five Nights at Freddy's sounds like it might be up your alley. I have to watch it played by Markiplier, who is so busy screaming and flailing in terror that the game's ambiance is diluted somewhat.

Less pants-shitting games you might enjoy are Ib or the Witch's House. They're both RPG Maker games, so really low res, no gore at all (for Ib), not much in the way of jump scares. Ib in particular I really liked! (I have a weakness for those low-res games.)
