Yeah, basically.

I keep seeing it a lot with people who've done shitty thing - rapists, murderers, con artists, child abusers etc. Close family members and friend will step in to defend them, saying stuff like "He couldn't possibly have done that, I've known him for years, he was such a good person..."

Even when all the evidence points overwhelmingly to the contrary.

I don't think they want to believe that someone they've known for years, someone they've loved and trusted, can be capable of such things. It's a way of protecting themselves.

I think a lot of that comes out of the notion that rapists are, by definition, inhuman monsters. People go, "Well, I know so-and-so, he's not an inhuman monster, therefore he's clearly not a rapist."

It's sort of this interesting black-and-white view of people - that because I saw the good side to this person, they musn't have any bad sides, and vice versa.

Personally, I think most people are capable of doing terrible things, given the right circumstances.

And if we're talking about rapists - more often than not, the rapist isn't an evil moustache-twirling stranger lurking in the bushes. They're more likely to be someone known to the victim, and trusted by them. A friend, a family member, a mentor, a colleague.
