That would have been so cool. But I can see why they didn't do it even taking ageism out of the equation—she was very frail and the makeup would have been horrendous to do. I wish they'd do a companion other than a young, pretty woman, though. If they ever did Evelyn from the audioplays I would be thrilled.

I do realize that it might be more complicated having an older companion (like you said, all the makeup, and wanting to avoid stereotypes), but I do think it would be neat. I know the show has done it in the past (Though I've only watched Who since Ten, I think there have been a couple of middle-aged companions?), and don't see why they couldn't do it again.

(Haven't heard the audiobooks, but I'll take your word for it! I liked Amy, and I don't exactly dislike Clara, but the show could def step out of its comfort zone.)

I think the only really regular companion who was middle-aged was Donna. There were a few others who were around for one episode, Jack Harkness was only a regular for about four episodes, and River Song is debatable because we don't actually know how old she is due to regenerating a couple of times.

Yea, I didn't forget Donna! Donna was definitely awesome, though I was wondering if Who had ever had a companion older than her. (For instance, even though I didn't see those episodes, I know Sarah Jane used to be a companion, then she came back for a few episodes later on when she was older. She even got her own spin-off, but I suppose that isn't exactly the same thing.)

I can see why people might count River Song simply because the actress herself is middle-aged, but from an in-verse point of view...I have no clue how old she is.

Sarah Jane is a weird one, as she was young when she was regular and as a late-middle-aged she was only a guest character on DW itself.

River... well redhead Melody regenerated into a baby iirc, so Mels had to go right through to her early twenties before "Let's Kill Hitler"... if Redhead was up to 10-yrs, that could could as middle-aged if you start judging "middle-aged" as mid-30s to 70 as Mels would have been somewhere in her mid-30s by then. That still puts her as younger than her actor though.

And this is all generalizing guesswork here.

Oh, I don't think having an older companion would be problematic in general, just one played by a young actress where prosthetics were involved. I think Donna might be the oldest companion, unless you count the Brig? Or Romana, but she didn't look old.

Evelyn is this 50-something history professor who gives no fucks at all. She immediately won my heart and made me like Colin Baker, who is much better when you can't actually see his stupid coat.

Ah, yea, I get that. It would of course be better to have an actual older actress play a new companion, but I guess I thought having Clara stay old would've been an interesting way to change things while she was still around. It was only a thought!

At any rate, I doubt Clara will stick around for longer than another season, so maybe our next companion will be more diverse. (Watch me be wrong.)

And a middle aged history professor would be a cool addition to the show! It would be nice to hear that perspective.
