Re: Fandom Annoyances
(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:44 pm (UTC)(link)Smirking Thranduil? Blushing Bard? How about no? I've been on Barduil tag on tumblr. Lots of AUs (vampire-AUs and modern day AUs especially) which I care nothing about. And also some very intense bottom/top discussions.
Legolas leaving plot point made zero sense to me, I'm still sort of baffled. I'm surprised more people don't write the conflict into their fics. That's what I would do "Legolas doesn't leave, so let's resolve this stuff".
Basically I was here before it was cool, and I don't know what to do with it now that it's cool.
Re: Fandom Annoyances
(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)Not all the fics are bad. Naturally there are a few gems. But the majority of fic is the usual dreck that feels like it's written by teenagers who are only there because of the pretty from the movie and will move on soon enough. Some of them have awesome premises but sadly the execution is terrible. And, since it's still new, there are too many WIPs and I don't have any faith any of them will be finished so I'm not touching them.
What did you want to discuss? I'd love to discuss the movies and/or books.
Re: Fandom Annoyances
(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)For me, the reason I got into Bard/Thranduil was precisely the fact that they were both a bit older and fathers, so I could avoid all the blushing and needless drama I find with younger couples. Apparently not the case?
I don't think Bard/Thranduil will last very long, since there's no new material coming out. It'll die out in couple of months, and have a re-surfacing when extended editions and behind the scenes come out and then it'll slowly disappear.
So nice of you to offer to talk. I'd love to hear what you thought about the third movie, and if you have any thoughts on Bard/Thranduil you know I'm all about that.
Re: Fandom Annoyances
(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)Overall, I did like the third movie quite a bit. It's the first of the three movies that I actually wanted to see again in the theater (I'm not fond of theaters). But, it did have its flaws.
With regards to Bard&Thranduil, I was very happy to see their interactions. I agree with you in liking them as fathers and them connecting on that point. I liked that Thranduil seemed to warm to Bard so quickly and included him in everything as if he just naturally should be included.
I disliked that they killed off Thranduil's wife in the movies and strained his relationship with Leoglas. (Legolas is nothing like the merry Elf from the books.) Personally, I believe that Thranduil's wife is very much alive and I always include that in my fics. Sometimes I keep Bard's wife too, but I do like him as a struggling single father.
I disliked that Thranduil seemed gung-ho for war when that is the antithesis of his character in the book. BUT, I do think that his actions spoke louder in that he did actually try pretty much everything to avoid war. I adored Lee Pace overall and thought both actors did a great job.
How about you? What did you think?
Re: Fandom Annoyances
(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)I had trouble with the third film, a lot stemming from too long battle scenes. I get very distracted. I had the same problem with Return of the King.
I really liked Thranduil+Bard interaction, it seemed very natural to me and also very equal, and like they genuinely liked each other. I totally see why so many people came to the ship after the movie.
I disliked Legolas' mother's death mainly because they made it a plot point. From the second movie I had gathered that there was some tension between Legolas and Thranduil and the conflict was mainly between those two. Then in the third movie we are suddenly introduced to "Legolas had issues with his mother" and I had literally no clue where that came from. I was disappointed that Thranduil's and Legolas' only real conversation was about Legolas' mom who we never saw and Aragorn (yes PJ I know you made LOTR, no need to reference it all the time). I didn't mind Legolas-Thranduil conflict IF it had been actually resolved.
I do adore Bard and his young ones, and I really liked how clearly it was shown in the third movie how much Bard cares for them. Really I just adore Bard.
Thranduil marching an army into Dale before any peace-talk was even attempted did strike me as bit odd, but I guess that was the only way to get his army to be present. And well he did let Bard try diplomacy, so I guess that's something.
Acting was great from Evans and Pace and lots of others. I didn't like it as much as the other two, it could have used some more quiet moments and all the battling was exhausting to watch.
