It's possible, but the stats mentioned in this thread would suggest that despite the quantity of gen-fic, it's simply not what most people want to read or seek out.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 12:16 am (UTC)(link)I don't know, it works well enough for me. As far as I can tell I'm mostly best known for my character studies, friendship fic, AUs and long found-family fic, with a few of my longer shipfic and a few of my rarepair fics thrown in.
Even if the bulk of the statistics seem against you, with some luck and the right circumstances (such as choice of fandom) you can still find your niche, I think.
