I write predominantly genfic in a variety of fandoms (gen is about half my output, or as much as all other kinds of fic combined), and I have exactly zero explicit fics, and I usually get fairly decent hits/comments/kudos. I think this is from a combination of things, though: I write a lot of fic, I write in a variety of fandoms, I usually find character niches (pick an LBD character, write a bunch of both gen and ship fic for them, pull readers to one via the other), and I write a lot of strong team/family/friendship feels fic that hits the h/c, found-family, angst type buttons for people.

So ... depends on the fandom and the style of fic you're writing, but I think there are niches were genfic can be reasonably popular?

Depends very much on the fandom. I'm not the OP, mind you, but I've written genfic of a variety of genres (crack, AU, horror, casefic, character studies) in my fandom. Unless there's some shippy content, be it romance or porn, between the 2 male leads who are the juggernaut pairing, many (most?) people just won't look. FWIW I've written some ship fic, too; even though IMO my genfic is much better stuff, it's always the ship fic that gets the attention.

If there are readers who really enjoy genfic, they mostly aren't saying so. I suppose it's possible that shippers are likelier to voice their enthusiasm because that's the dominant discourse. Once I went on the fandom's chatroom and tried to have a conversation about something other than the dominant ship, but it didn't go anywhere. The people taking part wanted to talk only about the juggernaut pairing, how cute they are together, funny nicknames for them, etc.

I try to avoid fandoms with juggernaut pairs, except for a couple of times when I actually did ship it as well. I tend to like ensemble casts, and I adore team canons with lots of team fic. My big one recently, though I've wandered away since Phase 2, was the MCU, and all five of my top-ranked fics by hits, comments and kudos in that fandom were genfic.

I can see that it's very fandom-dependent, and I have something of a hatred for juggernaut ships even when I do ship them because they tend to blanket the fandom in a sense of sameness, but sometimes you get lucky and genfic does work?

"I think there are niches were genfic can be reasonably popular?"

It's possible, but the stats mentioned in this thread would suggest that despite the quantity of gen-fic, it's simply not what most people want to read or seek out.

I don't know, it works well enough for me. As far as I can tell I'm mostly best known for my character studies, friendship fic, AUs and long found-family fic, with a few of my longer shipfic and a few of my rarepair fics thrown in.

Even if the bulk of the statistics seem against you, with some luck and the right circumstances (such as choice of fandom) you can still find your niche, I think.
