Hey I can feel you on this. I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting a chance and I'm sorry that your fandom's that way.

Hugs,if wanted

Use this to your advantage. Lure them in with porn in the first chapter then drop it. If gen fics aren't getting hits, that means most people aren't giving it a chance. But maybe once they do, they'll find they like it. That first porny chapter could be your foot in the door.

how often do people really enjoy a bait and switch? Because I bet it's not often.

As a reader, I also wish more people would give genfic a chance. Oddly enough, ff.net seems to have a greater appreciation for genfic.

The vast majority of fanfic readers are only in it for the porn, though.

I agree totally with your sentiment and your frustration, but trust me, you'll make yourself a lot less frustrated once you realize that the audience for anything other than porn is pretty limited (or VERY limited, in some fandoms).

I totally understand. It's only now, after many of my fandoms are all but dead, that people are reading my genfic (or het fic, either one).

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Today I learned that AO3 is considered a porn-y place, after my friend told me she accidentally found my fic and was surprised by the lack of porn since it was on AO3. I was surprised. Has it always been so?

But yeah, platform is key. If you haven't tried ff.net then try there? Also sometimes kink memes have surprising amount of gen-prompts, if you're willing to go through all the smut.

I feel you, OP. I write shipfic, I have OTPs, but I don't and won't write porn. I love my romance, I'm such a romantic. But the furthest it goes in text is kissing. If there's sex it's implied/fade to black.

I'm somehow more okay with it because I like my own writing, and what I write doesn't exist anyway (mainly rare pairs.. and the write what you want to read mindset) but I completely understand your frustration. It does suck for your fics to not have much feedback.

But like I said, I was used to that anyway.. because rare pairs.

Just keep writing if that's what you want to do. There may come a day when someone who loves that character is looking to read anything featuring them, and your fic is their saving grace. I've been that person before.

I feel you, OP. My true love is genfic, far more than romance, and I don't write smut at all. As such it's extremely difficult for me to attract readers, though I do try (read: have burnt myself out) writing little fluffy shippy things, hoping it would draw in readers and they'd stay for the 'serious' fics.

I don't even have much encouragement to give. It sucks to be in your situation. But if you keep writing what you want to write, eventually you might find those like-minded people who will love your fics, and this will be exactly what they want. And maybe you'll even make friends with them!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I recommend finding gen comms (or setting them up yourself) and soliciting for members in other fandom spaces. The people who are interested in more gen will come out of the woodwork -- a lot of people are interested in gen fic, but read mostly porn if there isn't enough supply of gen (and if the gen fics are buried in a mound of porn, they may not go looking for it because it's very time-consuming to go digging through porn in search of gen.)

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-01-17 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the fandom, OP?

btw, I feel that most fandoms'd benefit from having more genfic. I'm trying to think of any fandoms predominated by porn... ST TNG, Professionals (it's a UK version of Starsky and Hutch, so I guess S&H is the same), SPN, Sherlock, Master and Commander...

I feel like apologizing because I do read a lot of shippy fic (not just specifically porn; long, drawn-out get together fic, often quite plotty) but that doesn't mean I don't enjoy gen. I wouldn't be against more of it.

(One of my favorite fics ever was a LOTR gen series focusing on the friendship of Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. Can't for the life of me find it now, but I remember following it religiously and absolutely adoring all the action, friendship and intrigue.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
That sucks and I'm sorry. :( Some fandoms aren't very discriminating, that's all.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I write predominantly genfic in a variety of fandoms (gen is about half my output, or as much as all other kinds of fic combined), and I have exactly zero explicit fics, and I usually get fairly decent hits/comments/kudos. I think this is from a combination of things, though: I write a lot of fic, I write in a variety of fandoms, I usually find character niches (pick an LBD character, write a bunch of both gen and ship fic for them, pull readers to one via the other), and I write a lot of strong team/family/friendship feels fic that hits the h/c, found-family, angst type buttons for people.

So ... depends on the fandom and the style of fic you're writing, but I think there are niches were genfic can be reasonably popular?

Is it possible that your writing just isn't to people's tastes? I mean, my fandom is very vocal about ALL THE PORN, but there's also a ton of not smutty fic that is beloved.

Just keep doing your thing, and if you're doing it well, an audience will form.

I never thought to be glad for most of my fics to be gen before. (Well, okay, Labyrinth was fucked up Sarah/Jareth because that's what I was paid, and the Persona 4 one had Kanji/Naoto, but Kanji was never onscreen because it was a Naoto fic.) Sorry to hear it, OP.

Eh, as far as I've been able to tell this is just how fandom works.

If I write something gen, it might get a quarter of the hits that my porn fic does. I just kind of deal with it. People want to read what they want to read, and a lot of the time that's fap fodder.

If you want to keep writing solely gen, start posting on ff.net instead of ao3, where the demographic is much younger and way more likely to be looking strictly for gen.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I've been writing fic since 1997 and it's all on AO3. My old porn very rarely gets a hit, but people keep reading the gen fics forever. None of them were super popular when I posted them, but all top ten fics (by hits or kudos) are gen. Fifteen of the top twenty are gen, and of the other four, only one is explicit. Porn is trendy, but gen sticks around.

I don't care about porn in fic but I tend to choose R and NC-17 fics because it's a guarantee that my pairing will get together, which is what I am in it for. I'm mostly there for the banter and will they won't they. Still, I read fic for pairings so it's probably no consolation for you, o lonely genfic writer. :/

Text: My fandom pushes out newcomers and anything that isn’t PORN porn porn porn porn (porn)

Genfic dies on impact.

No feedback. Few hits. No one cares.

I put my heart into a fic.

It gets nothing.

I’m not owed a readership.

I just want a CHANCE.

There’s so much that can be done with this character. But I feel like there’ sno room for me.

(porn is fine, but that’s all that gets lifted up)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Some people (a lot of people) just aren't interested in gen fic, the same way a lot of people aren't interested in smaller pairings. You know you're writing something unpopular before you even post, so why are you surprised?
