Today I learned that AO3 is considered a porn-y place, after my friend told me she accidentally found my fic and was surprised by the lack of porn since it was on AO3. I was surprised. Has it always been so?

But yeah, platform is key. If you haven't tried ff.net then try there? Also sometimes kink memes have surprising amount of gen-prompts, if you're willing to go through all the smut.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get how this is a thing.

On Marvel for AO3, for example, there's over 100,000 fics and only 16% of them are explicit.

Over half are for general audiences or teen, so I'm not sure why people think the porn predominates.

Shipping yes. Porn no.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing it's lack of knowledge about fandom in general. People tend to assume anything internet-related they don't get must be sex-based.

As for those who do know fandom, I guess if their only experience is ff.net where porn is forbidden, AO3 would look like a den of sin for them.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
What's the breakdown of the things people are reading, though?

Just because there are more General Audience fics posted, it doesn't mean those are the fics people are reading and commenting on.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Of the 20 fics with the most kudos, 6 of them are explicit. Quite a few are rated M though. But there's also T and G rated fics mixed in there.

If you sort by hits, it's the same thing 6/20 are explicit.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
So, according to that, 33% of the most read/liked fics are explicit, but what is the percentage of explicit fics vs. all other fics?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
MCU fics on AO3. Total fics : 78927

The breakdown is:

Teen And Up Audiences (26615)
General Audiences (22356)
Explicit (11758)
Mature (11070)

so there's near enough the same amount of Gen fics as there are Mature + Explicit combined.

Most popular Gen fic has 2387 comments, 5838 kudos and 91453 hits.

Most popular Teen+ fic has 3683 comments, 7320 kudos and 290000 hits.

Most popular Mature fic has 36222 comments, 8521 kudos and 258856 hits.

Most popular Explicit fic has 6223 comments, 6523 kudos and 207664 hits.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Is that a typo in the # of comments on the most popular mature fic?

If you sort all fics by number of hits, explicit stories do seem to be over-represented in the first pages. But I lack the time/interest to properly research this.

AO3 statistics!

[personal profile] neurofancier 2015-01-17 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Welp, okay, I went ahead and did some basic math. I compared the percentage of fic in each category with the percentage of fic of each category that were among the 65 fics with more hits. Results:

The most common fics were rated 'Teen and Up'. Gen fics represent a 24.1% of all the fic, but only a 7.69% of the most viewed fics. Most of the fics in the most viewed list were explicit (49%), even thought explicit fics only amount for 16.6% of the total.

Conclusion: Gen fic is very underrepresented and explicit fic is EXTREMELY overrepresented in the list of most viewed fics.

Things to take into account: small sample size (n=65 for a N=1,461,217 is abysmal), 22,921 fics were filtered out of the search for some reason (notice that the total number of fics was 1,461,217, but if you added all the fics by rating you got 1,438,296).

Without getting access to more data, this is the best I can do.

I don't know who you're talking about. And as shown above, if I take the time to make a spreadsheet, you can bet your ass I'm attaching my name to it.

If you wondered, it's a joke in General Comments. Whenever someone starts topics like Where you live/your gender/what side do you sleep on people call Spreadsheet Anon, who allegedly gathers all the info for purposes unknown.

ngl, got a little bit of a statisticsgasm from this.

Also very interesting to see the same sort of stats bearing out across various fandoms/the archive in general.

I am so bookmarking this, just because of the amount of satisfaction this gives me. So neat. Thanks for putting it together.

Ohhhhh man, serious data rather than personal anecdotes. That's fuckin' hot. I hope you don't have a Tumblr, though, because I think you can get kicked off of Tumblr for that kind of thing. :)

Oh man, a chart graph for fic ratings. That is awesome!

Wow, look at you math!

(I write a lot of Teen and Up genfic-- teen for occasional violence-- and I've always been happy with the number of hits and comments I get. Given these stats I'm really grateful now!)

This is awesome! Finally I can actually reference some data when I complain that gen fic doesn't get enough attention!

I think it's just because porn is allowed on AO3. Porn technically isn't allowed on ff.net.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-18 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
LOL.

Like that's stopped anybody.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I think a lot of older fans who originally had a bunch of M rated fics deleted in the early purge make it a point not to post explicit stuff there for fear it would get deleted. I know I don't...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-17 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
It depends on the fandom but AO3 is the only archive that allows porn. Fanfiction.net doesn't really allow it but is shit at enforcing its rules.
