Yeah. I honestly feel guilty that I churn out so many stories with no editing except my own. But it's that or expect a beta to keep to my timetable, and that just isn't fair to them. (Since I'll pound out, like, 8-12 thousand-word stories in a week, and want all of them looked over within hours.)

That said, longer shit that isn't my personal pet project, I DO plan to get edited.

This is the main reason I don't use a beta more often myself these days.

I've been having these times where I churn out fanfic, whereas before I used to be a slow, careful writer. I don't stick to the same fandom or pairing either, and some of my own subject matter frankly baffles me. What beta would put up with that? I wouldn't even ask.

Not to mention that sometimes I just want to post instantly and then never look at my own writing again. For those stories, a beta would be the kiss of death.

Yeah, I slam through stories like it's a contest. The longer stuff, I'd probably get betaed, but for my shorts where speed counts, and for my pet personal project which is basically for my own enjoyment (and if fans appear, by all means!), I am okay with my process.

There are definitely upsides to not using a beta, mainly in speed of posting. When I'm writing for a fest or something, I usually leave 2 weeks for the beta just in case they can't do it immediately.

I think the main downside is that it's too easy to get used to not using a beta, and then it's hard to go back.

Yeah, in my case, it's a matter of priorities. One of my back-burner projects is a MASSIVE epic alternative history fantasy where the Roman Empire never existed. If I don't get it mainstream published, I plan to try and Kickstart it and design the book myself.

Regardless, I would NEVER try and pull that until the book had been thoroughly critiqued and edited by numerous people.

But most of my stories are flash fiction, to be sold once, posted once, and enjoyed by all. What matters to me is popping them out fast and as well as I can, even if that means unbetaed.
