idk, i think we all liked Mithian because she was cool. i don't think this fandom has issues with women "getting in the way" of the slash pairing. the fandom seems to like Gwen and Freya just fine.

As I recall, Gwen took some heat for getting in the way back when her and Arthur got together. The only reason Freya doesn't get shit is because she died and is no longer a threat. Most of the babes of the week get eliminated as love interests in ways that satisfy fandom and thus prevent them from getting the vitriol they'd otherwise get.

I've certainly not come across any woman hate in this fandom, although I only dabble in the corners. I'm sure it's somewhere if you look hard enough.

If anything, a lot of the slashers also have fond memories of the Merlin/Gwen hints there were in earlier episodes. Merlin really doesn't have much luck with women in this series. The ladies either marry someone else, get imprisoned, or have to flee for their lives. Merlin's a girlfriend-repelling zone.

Yeah. I believe the fandom did have some hate directed at women, as fandoms tend to do, but I never really saw it since I came in late and stayed on the fringes.

Poor Merlin, he really didn't have any luck with love at all. Even Gwaine died. :( (I firmly believe Gwaine was pretty in love with Merlin.)

I would really like to believe this is true, but I saw the most vile stuff directed at Gwen/Angel Coulby during my time in this fandom. I was glad when the show ended just so I could enjoy the actress's work without wading through all the crap fandom flung at her.

Nah, I'm not even in the fandom and I still managed to stumble across some truly horrible stuff about Gwen/her actress.

Hmm. A lot of the stuff I saw was more racist like "Why is Gwen black" than "Gwen is in the way of Arthur and Merlin's love." I guess mice I came into the fandom a year after the show ended I didn't see the other hate.

I saw both. People kept going on about how the actress was so UGLY and why they cast someone so UGLY and man she was UGLY (and they always capitalized it too). I always wondered what those people looked like that they were calling that girl ugly.

Sorry to say but this fandom was AWFUL to Gwen in the early seasons. I wasn't even that involved in it, but almost every discussion turned into how ugly Gwen/Angel was and why they'd pick her to the main love interest and how she contributed nothing to the plot and on and on. It was really gross.

Alas, I also saw a lot of hatred for Morgana, though not because she was anyone's love interest. Everyone just seemed to hate her character because she tried to destroy Arthur and Merlin.

Fandom loved Elena for a while, and a couple of the other one-off love interests were well-received, but Gwen and Morgana got TONS of hate. Morgause seemed to be somewhat popular, but I think that's because she was never anyone's love interest.

Isn't that exactly what happened (albeit across character/actress lines) with Princess Elena? She turned up as Arthur's temporary love interest and everyone LOVED HER because she was SO PERFECT for him and it was JUST DEVASTATING that she wasn't the permanent het love interest.

Then fandom found out Georgia King was dating Bradley James IRL and everyone suddenly hated her and prayed she wouldn't come back.

I still wish Arthur had married Princess Elena. She was great and had a lot more chemistry with him than Gwen. But it had to be Gwen for the sake of the plot.

Probably, though I'll always have fond memories of Georgia appearing on-set during the filming of season four and fandom going from "yay, Princess Elena!" to "OMG NOOOO, SAY IT ISN'T TRUE!" once they realized she was there to see her boyfriend.

I came to Merlin after the series finished, so I never participated in the fandom when it was active, but... I don't even remember this character. Which season was she in?

One late episode of season four, and then an early one of season five. The first time around she was a fake love interest for Arthur, and the second time there was some mild ship-tease with Merlin.

While I wasn't in the fandom when it was all going down, I do think Mithia was alright, but i honestly didn't see much chemistry between Merlin and her. I also liked the princess Arthur was temporarily engaged to...but hey! I wanted Gwen and Lancelot...so...but I don't think there should have been any hate towards Mithia (I did get a little upset when she showed up and threatened Gwen and Arthur...but...)

Yeah, definitely. They would have pulled the usual "she was so cool but now she sucks because she's a love interest (which I hate because of totally legit feminist reasons)!" line, even though the first time around she had zero narrative purpose beyond getting rejected by Arthur because he was still in love with Gwen.
