Torrent Safety

(Anonymous) 2015-01-20 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I would like to download a movie from a torrenting site but I'm usually very wary of downloading programs from the internet. So, I was wondering if anyone had any spyware/virus issues from torrenting. Was it easy to get rid of after you were done needing it?

Also, what is the legality of torrenting. Like, would just having torrenting software but no movies still be illegal?

What are people's favorite torrenting sites? (I'm looking at http://kickass.so right now.) Any other useful advice? Thanks!

I've had fairly good luck with kickass. You can usually tell if a poster is reputable.

Legality wise, the software isn't illegal but downloading definitely is. Never stopped me, though I always end up buying the tv show/movie eventually when I have the money.

Make absolutely sure it's kickass.so. Kickass.eu is a fake that tries to trick you into downloading malware.

Having torrent software in and of itself is perfectly legal. It's really great if you want to send large files of ANY kind: I've used it for sending wedding photos and videos to the extended family, for example.

Rule of thumb: if you're trying to download a torrent, and it directly gives you a single .exe file without ever giving you a torrent, you just picked up malware. Especially if you're trying to download something massive, and the .exe arrived in a few seconds.

If you actually pick something up, it can be hell to get rid of. I had to uninstall my default browser, run an Avast scan, run a Malwarebytes scan, and do a system restore, and I still had to do some additional cleaning afterwards. You're probably safe if you're on a popular torrent off a major site, though--the good sites try to take down any reported malware.

i've never had problems with torrenting things. most site have ratings for their torrents so you can see which ones are good or bad, or you can read the comments to see.

lately i've been using kickass.to, there are others i've used in the past, but they're all pretty much dead now

Kickass is great, second favorite after Pirate Bay (which isn't back up yet). What I do for safety: Look for the most seeded copy and check out the user comments (more seeds means more comments, and often means the uploader is popular and more or less vetted). People will comment on legitimacy and quality to let you know what you're getting - that includes if they think they caught something from it. I also do a virus scan of the file after download because why not.
