there's this coworker I used to have irl who was from the south and was overly polite to a grating degree. absolutely infuriatingly cheerful to be around. and I could never tell if he was being polite or being extremely sarcastic and insulting. I don't know if it was just too big a cultural difference between how I was raised and how he was raised but he was a perfectly nice individual whose intent I couldn't read at all and it drove me crazy.
