Ahem, how to say this nicely... you think you've been circumspect about your judgmental approach, but unless your niece is dumb as a post, she's already picked up subtle hints from you about how you look at her, and her "odd" appearance, plus the slight whiff of victim-blaminess that you already acknowledge is there.
