they were probably trying to avoid he drama that they'd get by bringing her back up again. Seriously, native americans? PISSED (and i dont blame them)

If that were the case they would have stopped marketing the movie over here with merchandise, stuff at theme parks, etc. They haven't.

Honestly a video game is far less mainstream than dolls and theme park attractions so trying to avoid controversy? I don't think so. More Alice fits the traditional princess mold better than Pocahontas and the movie is not as popular as some other Disney movies. That would likely be the reason behind her not being there.

ETA: There was just as much controversy over Aladdin, more probably and that doesn't stop them from putting it in everything.

There's still face characters at parks and I believe there's still a stage show for it. Disney does put out merchandise for it at the Disney store. She pops up from time to time in the Princess line with a doll or what have you. I know I saw a new glass with her on it and a floaty Meeko in the bottom or something a few weeks ago.

It doesn't get as much merchandise because it's not as popular (like most of the Disney movies post Lion King), not because it's controversial. As I said, Aladdin brought about far more controversy for their supposedly racist depiction of the middle east and it still gets loads upon loads of merchandise.

again though, where's all the 'new' merch? No new movies, no new merch...

...You think they stop making merchandise when there are no new movies featuring the subject matter?

Err. If that were the case 90% of the stock in the Disney store would be obsolete.

"...You think they stop making merchandise when there are no new movies featuring the subject matter?"

Um, no. Lion King, etc. However, with things that stirred up such anger and controversy as Pocohontas, you'd expect since you don't see stuff out there, it isn't out there. Admittedly there isn't a disney store here but disney merchandise makes its way to all sorts of stores.

There's a Disney store out here, and they still put out Pocohontas stuff, even if it is buried under the deluge of Pirates of the Caribbean merch. I'm not saying that Pocohontas shouldn't have been a princess of heart (I do think she fits it better attitude-wise, not to mention the villain would've fit better too) but they probably picked Alice because she fit the physical mold better. Or they could've been like "two super nature worlds would suck" because Tarzan ... yeah, no excuse for that bs.

Re: 25

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
yeah they probably wanted variety for sure.

Re: 25

[identity profile] starchildorion.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
They should've picked Pocohontas over Tarzan but I think Tarzan had just recently come out so they were probably trying for a marketing ploy there.

I'm still voting on the "no more bitching pls" thing.

Re: 25

[identity profile] starchildorion.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's kinda pointless to bitch about a game that's been out for a few years, but wishful thinking shouldn't be all together thrown out; if the OP feels the way they do, then that's okay. It's not like they don't have a good point.

Re: 25

[identity profile] starchildorion.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I think that you should pause a moment and not consider the historical inaccuracies (which run rampant in... pretty much every animated Disney movie) and instead consider the Disney "canon" facts - Pocohontas is more of a 'princess' than Alice is.

Re: 25

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
Um, the historical inaccuracies SHOULD be thought of here. I don't think it's a good idea to use a historical figure as a game character when that character is completely bastardized. :/

Re: 25

[identity profile] starchildorion.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Not in context of what makes a 'canon' Disney princess, which is the point. I do think that her character as you put it, is completely bastardized. That is an important topic, but to me is irrelevant to the main argument: DISNEY princesses. Which is separate from the 'real' people or even canon - Disney bastardized a ton of characters from a ton of literary and historical sources. It's a fact of life with Disney (consider Mulan).

I think that you are RIGHT that Pocohontas is bastardized. However, I think that saying she shouldn't have been in the game because she's bastardized from her historical counterpart is kinda moot because then we should be arguing that Cinderella's stepsisters should've sliced off their toes and heels in the original children's movie.

Re: 25

[identity profile] tealizard.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is, she shouldnt be brought in as a KH character because it is REINFORCING the inaccuracies. Thats the last thing we need -_-

ugh poor mulan ;_;

Re: 25

[identity profile] starchildorion.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I can see your point, but I don't think it's that big of a deal (nor the issue with why she wasn't in it, due to the fact that Mulan was in KHII). I think that just opens up a whole new level of personal responsibility when it comes to stuff like that... when I went to see Pocohontas when I was like 7-8 or however old I was my parents made sure to tell me that she was a real individual and we looked up basic information on her, or even when I watched the old Snow White or Sleeping Beauty movies my parents made sure to remind me that there were original versions and the movies I was watching were 'Disney' versions. BUT LIKE I SAID. OPENING UP A CAN OF WORMS THERE.

tl;dr version: It's important that we recognize that Pocohontas was bastardized by Disney, however arguing that a Disney bastardization shouldn't be in a Disney game (full of other bastardizations) is splitting hairs. :'

[identity profile] haro.livejournal.com 2008-01-02 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Admittedly there isn't a disney store here but disney merchandise makes its way to all sorts of stores.

But most of the merchandise, except for new movies and a few of the older classics is only available at Disney stores.

And also there was a ton of controversy over various aspects of Lion King as well. No matter the content of a Disney movie- if it ends up popular, it brings in loads of dissenters.

No point continuing. You're completely ignoring most of what I'm saying and it's not that big a deal either way I think. I personally sort of roll my eyes at the controversy over Pocahontas. It's not accurate, but it is in no way degrading/presenting the Native American culture in a bad light. Poc is a heroine and the Native American people come across far more sympathetic and innocent on the whole than the whites. It's not until one of their own is killed that they even lash out. The characters and cultures are multi-layered in it, unlike say, the cartoonishly stereotypical "red men" in Peter Pan (which although a common depiction of NA at the time, comes across extremely Non-PC now).

You want to see potentially controversial, go watch Disney's Song of the South. The movie is so controversial that Disney literally refuses to put it on DVD and it hasn't been marketed in any way shape or form for literally decades.
