There was massive upheaval at the time. The former head of the school refused to write recommendation letters for graduating students unless he sincerely believed they merited it, so some parents accused him of harassing students and had him out on his ear. The school split along lines of folks who believed the allegations and folks who didn't, and a lot of teachers quit rather than deal with the internal politics. Most of the replacements had no prior teaching experience, so it was chaos all around.
