I see people defending the art and animation all the time on tumblr, and they're always like 'well the 90s anime looks even worse!'

Like... uh... No. No it doesn't. It's 20 years older than Crystal, dating from a time before Toei used handy computer tools to help the process along, and still manages to be more on-model, more fluid, more dynamic in color range and lighting, and more consistently detailed. The 90s anime actually had some pretty fantastic animation for it's time, especially considering the lack of budget and Toei's track record of cheaply-produced schlock.

Who the fuck would argue that??!? That'd be like comparing an animated TV show with a theatrical film.

The computer tools are irrelevant to the quality of animation or to be on-model, the animation is still hand-drawn nowadays. It just depends on what they drawn on, some animators draw on paper then scan to a computer. Some draw straight to a computer. The good animators, BONES, Production IG and Gainax all draw on paper then scan to a computer.

The computer tools are used for coloring or digital effects, but they aren't used in actual animation (I'm talking about the main characters and so of course, cars, mecha or things like that usually are CG).
