I'm not saying that the girls aren't more fleshed out in the original anime than they are in Crystal, but a lot of people were dropping the series purely because of the general love story and how it made everything heteronormative, but the original anime did that as well? Just... not with the generals. So it bewilders me how some of these people are okay with characters like Rei and Minako, who show no interest in men in the manga, doing so in the first anime, but them doing so in the second anime is an offense bad enough to drop the show even when some of them were enjoying it a lot up to that point.

And don't get me wrong, I hate the romance plotline with the generals. But I also... dislike how they made the girls all boy-crazy in the first anime as well.

DA. I'll say first off that the general/senshi romance as a concept doesn't bother me. It was extremely poorly executed though.

I think when people go on about "hetero normative" though it's because there was Zoisite/Kunzite in the original anime and even though Rei and Minako were boy crazy, they still weren't specifically *with* anyone so it might have made it easier to ship the inner senshi if you wanted? This is what I assume.

And I'll take boy crazy with personalities over the lack of personality in crystal. The boy crazy thing also did make sense for Minako and Makoto (Minako was not disinterested in men in the manga, she just tended to chose duty over love, which is something even the anime touched on) and they never made Ami as bad as the rest, the only one who really shouldn't have been so boy crazy is Rei.

Zoisite Kunzite was completely 90's anime only though. They weren't gay in the manga.

The point of this conversation is the complaint of how heteronormal the 90's anime was.

While it was for the Senshi, there was ZoisiteKunzite as well as Fish Eye.
