By cottaging, do you mean staying in a cabin for the summer? I'd say they'd either take a ferry to Vancouver Island and stay at their (usually retired) relative's place, or they'd head in the other direction and end up in one of the small towns in the interior. Some people owned cabins in the interior but most of the people I knew rented the place.
