I absolutely adored it.

But I don't understand how anyone thought it would be nominated, let alone win anything.

Same here. It was a cute movie but idt it deserved an Oscar, ffs.

Because it was better critically than 99% of the rest of the animated offerings last year. I saw all of them sans Song of the Sea (because it just isn't ANYWHERE!), and the only one who would truly deserve to win over it (not counting Sea) is Princess Kaguya.

The Academy doesn't want to admit it mocked them and all of Hollywood. They don't want to admit that a toy advertisement completely broke people's expectations of what it would be.

I get not liking it, but the film isn't without merit at all.

But the awards aren't really about what's good. They're about what they *think* will make them look good.

The Lego Movie is not pretentious so of course, it's not going to be nominated.

Princess Kaguya deserved to win, tbh. It was amazing.

And I personally do kind of think the Lego Movie doesn't have much merit to it. The plot is the most rehashed, obvious thing ever. It had a few cute moments, but that's about it.

I know it will never win, but I'm rooting for Kaguya at the Oscars. Such a gorgeous movie!

I know, right? T^T it's so disappointing. It's also a shame that we get something that beautiful from Japan, and most of the stuff coming out of the Western studios is... visually lackluster, to me. They're no longer pushing the boundaries of animation in the big studios, I think, just doing 3D where the upshot is basically "look we made this thing look really good with 3D animation". I'm not dissing 3D, but... I want to see more than just technical excellence.
