I had a wisdom tooth (and the molar in front of it) taken out a couple of years ago now. It was done by an oral surgeon, but because the general anesthesia was so expensive, I had it done while I was awake.

It actually wasn't that bad. I had a couple of Valium beforehand and gas and lots of novocaine (or whatever they're using now) during the procedure. Only felt a twinge or two, and they were watching for me to alert them I was still feeling it so they could stop and give me another shot before they continued.

They had to use a saw to cut part of the wisdom tooth out; the noise didn't bother me much, but the worry that I might not be numb enough did, until they actually started and I didn't feel anything. The whole thing only took a few minutes.

In retrospect, I'm actually kind of glad I didn't get the general. Apart from the money, I've read recently that people who've spent a lot of time fully anesthetized may be more prone to Alzheimer's later in life.

Eh, I already have a family history of Alzheimers, so I might as well live on the edge, right? /sarcarm

I'll look into that, thanks.

And that's twice someone's mentioned valium, so if I do have to get it while conscious, I'll ask after that.
