Wisdom teeth =_=

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-23 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
On one hand, I only have three, and only two that need to be removed (the third one is still so high up they doubt it will ever erupt, so yay?)

On the other hand, that means I still have to get two removed, so there goes spring break.

I mean, I didn't have plans, but knowing that I now can't make any is annoying.

I really hope that my Mum's insurance will pay for me to go to an oral surgeon; I really don't want to be conscious (numbed, but still!) while they're digging out my wisdom teeth. D:

I actually still have all four, never had them removed. Good luck - sounds unpleasant :(

Oh man, that sucks. Getting wisdom teeth out is such a pain (literally). Have they already started coming through, or are they still under the gum?

And your regular dentist won't be able to put you under if you have to go to her/him? Gah! Definitely rooting for you to be able to go to the oral surgeon.

Re: Wisdom teeth =_=

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-23 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
One of them has started coming through, according to the x-rays the dentist took, and the second one is close. (The third one is still by the roots of the teeth it's next to, so the chance of it ever coming out is like, 00.0% according to the dentist, thank goodness!)

Yeah, he can't, he can only numb it. They did say that, if we have to do it like that, I could bring my iPod with me, and listen to it during the whole thing, but with things going on inside my jaw, I don't know how good of a distraction that would be. |D

My story is quick!

I only got the two. They started to erupt and the gym around then got infected and I couldn't afford a dentist so I cut the gum flap and that fixed up. Some 4 years later I go to the dentist cause a tooth hurts and we discover that the back ones are cavity filled cause I have a small mouth and the brush can't reach. Decide to get rid of them. It was like $80 a tooth cause they were already all way out?
He jabbed me with a local, basically gave a twist and pull for each. Gave me a padding to hold in my mouth until it clotted and I went home.

Was at work the next day - that was stupid. I should have taken a day or two off. Fine after that. Pretty quick and painless although night one I drooled ridiculously in my sleep.

I'm lucky I got mine out during high school so I didn't have to worry about missing anything from school.

I went to an oral surgeon and was knocked out on a Friday. Was completely fine by Monday. No swelling because I kept ice on pretty much the whole first day.

When I had them out, I wasn't feeling any pain. Apparently if you wait until they bother you, the surgery is more painful. I hope insurance comes through for you and that the surgery goes well. If you manage to schedule it the first weekend of your spring break, you might be able to make small plans for the second weekend.

Oh, nice! The doctor did suggest coming in on a Thursday, and skipping class on that day + Friday, but unfortunately my most important classes are M/W/F, so that's not going to happen. :(

I'll try the ice thing; do you mean you literally just had ice on your face the whole time? Or like, an ice pad, or something?

I'll try that; I was really hoping to go to the beach to see if I could spot any whales during their migration, but maybe I'll be able to on that last weekend still. :3

The best thing is getting them out of the way as early as possible. I had mine hurting me for like 6 months before I got them out, and it was awful.

And at least for me the surgery itself wasn't that bad at all. There was about an hour or so of pain between the anaesthetic from the surgery wearing off, and the Vicodin kicking in, and that was kinda bad. But other than that, it was copacetic. Just zoning out on the couch.

I'm sorry, that really sounds awful. :(

I've had surgery before, and I remember that feeling! I liked that feelings. |D Like I said above, my roommate/friend has been telling me ALL the horror stories about getting wisdom teeth removed, so it's kind of nice to know that it's not all horror stories, thank you!

Fair warning: my hubs' dentist nicked a nerve in his jaw during the procedure and now, two years later, he still can't feel that soul patch area under his bottom lip. Says it feels like it's injected with novacaine, just numb. :(

I was conscious for it, and mine was in sideways with the roots connected and took a couple hours to get out. It didn't hurt, it just took forever. I gave no fucks whatsoever because they gave me a Valium beforehand. Seriously, ask for it by name, it's great. I did almost pass out afterwards because I went walking around Costco like an idiot, so don't do that, but otherwise, I took maybe two of the bunch of painkillers they gave me and was fine in a day. Some people have a really hard time, but not everybody.

If I can't go to the oral surgeon, I'll see if that's a possibility, thanks! :D

Re: Wisdom teeth =_=

(Anonymous) 2015-01-23 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I hope insurance allows you to see an oral surgeon! I had only three wisdom teeth, and those were minimally impacted; with the oral surgeon, I just zoned out for what seemed like no more than a minute or two, and woke up with no wisdom teeth. I had minimal pain afterward--I might have taken one of the percocet he prescribed to me, at most, and I'm sure that if I had had classes the next day, I could have gone provided it didn't involve driving. I'm sure that having it done by an oral surgeon--and not being awake for it--had a lot to do with my quick recovery.

I know that not everybody is that lucky--still, why shouldn't you be?

Wish you the best.

Re: Wisdom teeth =_=

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-23 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! <3 I don't actually know how impacted mine are, but the dentist said that I could wait until spring break, or even summer vacation if I have to, so I'm hoping that means that they're minimal. |D

I had all four out.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-23 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
They put me completely under, though I started crying when I woke up (apparently not an uncommon reaction to whatever they used, but very confusing to me, so fyi). One of mine broke when they pulled it so I had a terrible looking bruise along one side of my jaw, though the bruise itself didn't really hurt.

Just so you know, for me these things were true:
Even soft foods hurt to eat for a while.
I was very sensitive to the temperature food/drink in my mouth for a while.
Cleaning out the holes was kind of disgusting (they gave me this plastic syringe thing to shoot water in them because stuff can get caught in them).
Lots of drool, I mean serious saliva production.

[personal profile] loracarol 2015-01-23 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
That's interesting, I didn't know that; do you know what they used on you, may I ask?

Ugh, yeah, my roommate's been telling me all about how her teeth had to be broken to get pulled out, and it's one of the reasons I really don't want to be conscious. I'm just terrified of the noise already. |D

Thanks for the heads up! I did know the drool thing, but the others are new. :)

I had a wisdom tooth (and the molar in front of it) taken out a couple of years ago now. It was done by an oral surgeon, but because the general anesthesia was so expensive, I had it done while I was awake.

It actually wasn't that bad. I had a couple of Valium beforehand and gas and lots of novocaine (or whatever they're using now) during the procedure. Only felt a twinge or two, and they were watching for me to alert them I was still feeling it so they could stop and give me another shot before they continued.

They had to use a saw to cut part of the wisdom tooth out; the noise didn't bother me much, but the worry that I might not be numb enough did, until they actually started and I didn't feel anything. The whole thing only took a few minutes.

In retrospect, I'm actually kind of glad I didn't get the general. Apart from the money, I've read recently that people who've spent a lot of time fully anesthetized may be more prone to Alzheimer's later in life.

Eh, I already have a family history of Alzheimers, so I might as well live on the edge, right? /sarcarm

I'll look into that, thanks.

And that's twice someone's mentioned valium, so if I do have to get it while conscious, I'll ask after that.

Any chance you can wait for them to erupt? At my dentist, at least, it's about a five minute procedure once they've erupted, and 3 of those minutes are waiting around for the numbing to kick in. You can drive afterward, too.

Oh, I have a wisdom teeth non-horror story!! I had all four of mine (completely impacted) taken out, and I went with the IV sedation because I also didn't want to be conscious for it.

The recovery process was fine, though; I got mine out Friday, took Vicodin and kept icing my face, and by Saturday the swelling was mostly gone. I think I might've kept up with the Vicodin on Saturday, but by Sunday I was fine. I wouldn't recommend trying to chew anything particularly crunchy, but softish foods worked fine for me - I think I was back to a mostly-normal diet by the following week.

One thing I will point out (which was mentioned earlier) is that if you don't get a little syringe from your dentist to clean the food particles out of the sockets, you definitely should buy one (especially if you're getting bottom teeth out). Like I said, I was feeling fine and pain-free just a couple days out of the surgery....until I started getting HORRIBLE pain in the sockets and was driven back to taking the painkillers. It turned out that there was food stuck in the sockets (which I couldn't rinse out), and it was actually decomposing in there... :/ I went back to the dentist, he squirted a water/mouthwash blend to clear out the icky stuff, and I seriously felt fine again!! So don't worry, just make sure that food isn't trapped. :)

And if you can't get the sedation, you can definitely get the gas - and then you probably won't care that they're digging out your teeth! :D (My husband had his out with just novocaine/gas, and he was fine!)

Good luck!!!

I had all four plus a molar (there wasn't a molar matching it on the bottom so that wasn't good) taken out. The good part was that I had done in college and they had a two week spring break. (It's now one week.) So I had two weeks to recover! But man those drugs gave me the *weirdest* dreams. I also remember laying on the couch, sleeping for 30 minutes, waking up groggy and going back to sleep 30 minutes later. It was weird.
