Image: Promo picture for the show "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit". Olivia Benson looks straight at the viewer with a displeased expression.

Text: This is one of the worst fandoms I've ever been a part of.
I have no idea what kind of mental gymnastics you have to go through
to watch this show, declare Olivia Benson your queen and role model
AND THEN proceed to slut shame and victim blame the female character that isn't her at every opportunity.
Just how?

Smaller text: Olivia Benson does not approve.

One time I tried reading yaoi with SVU in the background and felt so bad I had to close the window. :(

Some freaky shit used to pop up in /y/ let me tell you. "Underage farm animal gang rape? . . . well . . . how's the art?"

USED to? Has it toned down?

I didn't really like SVU as much after Stabler left, but now there's no Munch, Cragen, Casey or Huong anymore... well I've pretty much given up.

I always shipped Alex and Benson although I think Benson and Stabler must have slept together at least once.

When I still watched that show, every single detective and officer acted like complete assholes towards the suspects or witnesses, so isn't the fandom just taking the lesson to heart?

I think SVU is pretty much unwatchable these days. Not only does suddenly every single female officer need a trauma backstory, the "cases" get too uncomfortably close to very recent real life events. There have always been inspired-by-reality-cases, but it's gotten worse - and I think that, especially with unsolved/unproven crimes that just happened one year ago (or less), it's really lacking taste.
Particularly tasteless was the way they mocked Shia LaBeouf in a recent episode and thought it was a great idea to air the episode, where the Shia LaBeouf stand-in gets accused of rape even after LaBeouf recently stated he had been raped during the very art installation the show was mocking.

What?

Damn....that's just...wow

I'm glad I switched to Criminal Minds now....

Supposedly that guy was actually supposed to be Franco but lots of people thought it was supposed to be Shia LaBeouf.

But yeah, the 'ripped from the headlines' cases are ridiculous. Like the 'Paula Deen shoots Trayvon Martin' episode.

The Law&Order franchise has always relied on "ripped from the headlines" storylines- I remember one of the early season one episodes was based on Tawana Brawley. But generally, the stories they were adapting had happened several years prior to the episode's airing, not several weeks. And I don't remember them relying so much on celebrity scandal "headlines" to rip from.

This is true, but with the cancellation of the Mothership and CI, there's no place left for them to do the "ripped from the headlines" stuff but SVU, regardless of whether it's appropriate for the SVU squad to be handling. Or mashing together so many elements obviously taken from disparate recent headlines- Ray Rice, Solange Knowles, Darren Sharper, and Donald Sterling all in one episode, recently!

I will say, though, they did the Jodi Arias-inspired episode (15x18 "Rapist Anonymous") pretty well with regards to the police/legal story alone. I could have done without Amanda's subplot and she shouldn't have ever been left on that case, but it was okay for an L&O "ripped from the headlines" adaptation.

Whoa, wtf?

I'm no fan of Shia LaBeouf as an actor, but I had no idea about the rape thing. That poor guy. Jesus.

Same mental gymnastics to forget that Ice-T was a pimp

Also famous for writing a death metal song about corrupt police that almost got banned - called "Cop Killer" and participation the the XXX movie "Ice-T's Pimpin 101"
