If people want published slash novels, they'll have to buy them and show publishing companies that slash is a marketable commodity. But they don't, because there's tons of slash for free on the internet.

So instead, you're going to get mediocre het novels, because people pay money for them.

Uh, there ARE M/M publishers. Circlet Press, Less Than Three, Cleis has some... I know, because I've been meaning to submit things to them. They're a fairly new and growing thing.

I know. They're not what I'd call mainstream publishers and not widely available in brick and mortar stores or libraries the way OP's mediocre het novels are, though.

That, I can not deny, alas. The gay bookstore has become mostly a thing of the past, though a few hang on.
