Enh, for me, after it's been more than five years, I start getting leery of any further movies. Once it's been more than TEN years, I pretty much assume it'll be awful. Because generally, if it takes that long for a movie to come out, I assume one of the following has happened:

1. A sequel was never planned, and the team is trying to shoehorn something new in.
2. One or more important figures in creating the movie died or were fired, meaning a new creative team is trying to handle it.
3. There has been massive bureaucratic slowdown, possibly involving who owns the rights of what, and the film may have changed hands and creative teams multiple times.

There have been a couple nice surprises for me in other media (for instance, I really enjoyed Alice: Madness Returns, and it came out ten years after the first Alice game) but so far, the rule generally works.

I call it the 'Duke Nukem 4ever' syndrome.

I guess it's cause I'm one of those few people who LOVE the Star Wars prequels, along with the Originals. And that I liked Pirates 2, but felt three was kind of bad cause they filmed it literally right after two and the writers had an unfinished script.

Though Star Trek can fit you category, even if I liked aspects of STItD.

Well, Pirates 2 only came out three years after the first one, didn't it? That's still a reasonable amount of time. It's only when there's a really long gap between movies that I get suspicious.

I admit, I really didn't care for the new Star Trek movies. Sorry!
