Old movies that didn't hold up

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-01-27 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
So, recently I realized I had never seen the Highlander movie. My partner was shocked because she had seen it when she was four and remembered it being "really awesome". Needless to say, we downloaded it and watched it pretty much immediately.

It was laughably bad. Incomprehensible physics, conversations that didn't seem to take place in reality, anachronisms everywhere, special effects that were bad even for the time period... oh and some of the worst acting I've seen in ages.

So, f!s tell me about the movies from your childhood that didn't seem as good in the light of adulthood.

Hahaha, oh god Highlander. That's actually a 80s movie I hope they remake at some point because I'd love to see it with better special effects and people who can act.

It spawned a whole pop culture phenomenon! It's a fantastic concept but it's just so incredibly dated now. We just couldn't get our heads around how much people must have liked it in order for it to explode into its own (way better) tv series and several other movies.

Actually Highlander is incredible. It's not good but it is incredible.

For me I would say Star Wars. Not that the original series is bad, but it's just not this amazing thing that it used to be. It's just kind of... some fine science fiction movies.

I unfortunately waited until I was 15 to see the original trilogy. By then it just seemed... very mediocre. I think you really need to be a child to appreciate them.

Oh, yeah, I think you can say that Highlander is a great bad movie. Good soundtrack, some interesting prop and costume design, actually an OK script (unlike the dire sequels)--and a trippy concept that doesn't quite hold up on examination.

Them's fightin' words. Highlander is awesome in part because of the cheesiness.

I can only assume you also saw it as a kid, because it's definitely not awesome. I wish it were awesome.

It was a great concept and definitely unintentionally hilarious at times.

I seem to recall Event Horizon being better 10 years ago...

I recently rewatched Lion King, after not having seen it in years. Everyone always talks about how amazing it was and I remember liking it (it was never my favorite but I definitely enjoyed it).

I was underwhelmed by the viewing. It was okay but it wasn't amazing to me. It just seemed like a lot of other Disney movies.

Also, I watched the BBC Narnia shows when I was younger and got them fairly recent-ish. They weren't bad all things considered -- they are charming -- but the lack of production money is very evident. :)

The Lion King was a product of its time I think. I still enjoy it for the songs and such, but I kind of agree that it doesn't really have the emotional impact it used to for me.

I have been watching a lot of old movies for a podcast I listen to.

Some that have not held up are Replacement Killers, Event Horizon, Children of the Corn, and The Day After Tomorrow.

Mission Impossible, Gattaca, and Arachnophobia are still great.

Oh man. I remember Gattaca being awesome even when I had almost no idea about the science behind the human genome.

I wonder if it would still be good in light of that...

The Matrix. GodDAMN was that movie stuffy and pretentious. Was way more interesting when we were kids.

I realize it was a famous musical LOOONG before it was a movie, but Rent was a helluva lot better when I was nineteen.

I mean, I still love the music and I love parts of the plot, but at thirty, everyone seems so annoying and, dare I say it... entitled. Man, if I went back in time and said that to my nineteen year old self, I would hate me.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-01-27 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaah the first time I saw Rent I was 25 and I was like... what the actual hell is this supposed to be.

The problem with Rent is that it's awesome when you're in college.

Then you go out into the real world and have to, well, pay your damn rent. And your student loans. And your utility bills. And your costs of living like gas for your car.

It's amazing how quickly you lose all sympathy for most of the characters after hitting the real world.

I saw Big Daddy in seventh grade and loved it.

I saw it again a few years after that, and hated it. Honestly, I think being a seventh grader, I just liked all the sex/poop jokes.

I had to google that to even understand, but that sounds kind of like something you would have to be twelve years old or drunk to enjoy.

Carrie (the 70s one) wasn't even that good. I might be really picky about horror I haven't seen that much and found pretty much everything I've seen boring or laughable but YEAH. Carrie. Not worth the hype.

Neither was the original Karate Kid. I'm probably mostly lacking nostalgia goggles there since I only saw it within the last year.

Have to agree. These were my thoughts about The Exorcist when I finally got around to watching it a few years ago. Everyone is like OH MAH GOD SCURRIEST MOVIE and I was like "is this really supposed to be shocking?" lol

I saw this on tv once when I was a kid, never again, and it was kind of enshrined in my mind as THE BEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL THING EVER. It's still a cute version of The Frog Prince, and I especially like the first song, but good lordy is it not the paragon I remembered.

Almost allo cartoon series from my childhood. When I was a kid, we had all those shows from the 80s-90s and some old anime series from even before that. I remember thinking they were so cool and awesome. Today, all I can see is the terrible, terrible quality...
