Exactly. IMO, the instinct to characterize people who commit crimes like this as "monsters" is part of the detachment process. They're horrible acts, they don't seem like something a human could do because to think otherwise is frightening. You're surrounded by humans! So therefore the people who rape, kill, etc. are something less than human.

The sad truth is, they're not. They're terrible people, but they're fully human.
