Dried fruit

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone know where you can buy good, safe dried fruit in bulk that odes not cost an arm and a leg?

I love dried fruit and buy Wal-mart brand Tropical Trail mix. I like it but I don't enjoy a lot of the stuff in it. Specifically the nuts and apricots (does ANYONE like those?).

So I sort of wanted to just buy the fruit I like, specifically bananas, pineapples, and papaya. Any places to look?

I'm not in the US, but I just wanted to point out you can make our own dried apples quite easily - it's cheap and tasty. My great-aunt used to make them. Here's a guide (my aunt kept the skin on, but that's a preference): http://www.wikihow.com/Dry-Apples

I have good luck at my co-op, but if you don't have one that you can join, what about getting a dehydrator and drying your own? There are models out there that cost the earth, but also some for about $40--considering that you'll be saving money over the long term by only buying and drying the fruit you like, $39 doesn't seem too bad. That would also allow you to avoid the large amounts of added oil and sugar that you often get with banana chips and dried pineapple.

oh, and by the way, I love dried apricots and like to cut them up and put them in my oatmeal.

Are they still tasty? You can buy pretty affordable ones on amazon.

I'm not sure, since I've never tried one, but I'd imagine magazines like Mother Earth News and Organic Gardening would have ratings; apparently, some of them have the drawback that the contents don't dry evenly.

With a little time and patience you can dry just about anything.

My favorite is to make dried bananas by putting them in the oven on a low heat (~200F) for several hours until they're nice and chewy and have an incredible toffee flavour.

They're shockingly addictive though, so maybe don't do that.
