Re: Firefox advice?

You can try starting Firefox in safe mode to see if it's one of your addons that's causing this (many of them are probably out of date and need replacing if you've taken so long to upgrade). You can also try deleting all your Firefox profiles for a fresh start (make sure to backup your bookmarks first). Even when you uninstall and reinstall Firefox entirely, your profile data tends to remain, so if something's wrong in there, it could cause other issues.

Also, are you running 64 bit Windows? If so, you can trying installing Waterfox, which is basically a Firefox clone that replaces Firefox functionality on your system - your bookmarks, addons, settings, and so on, are accessible through Waterfox, so it looks and acts exactly like Firefox, just faster and more stable (for my 64 bit system, anyway).

Thanks, that's actually really useful! How do I see if it's one of the addons?

You got to "Menu > Help > Restart with addons disabled" to get Firefox to run clean. Browse like you normally do and if the crashing is gone, you'll know it's one of the addons. If it is, restart Firefox the regular way, go to "File > Addons", and disable-then-restart addons one by one, testing for crashing, until you narrow it down.
