Firefox advice?

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2015-01-27 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
So, few weeks back I installed the new version of Firefox on my desktop pc. This was long overdue, I was probably like 10 versions behind but whatever. Anyway, I'm fine with how it looks, but the damn thing keeps crashing and I have no idea why. The old version didn't. I wanted to update my laptop's version too, but now I'm sort of scared. Any idea what could cause this, because I have no clue. Never had this issue with any browser before.

No advice, sadly, but you're definitely not alone.

I've had problems with Firefox ever since their last big interface update last year (around May IIRC? So could be around the time of your last update?). Very slow, very buggy, numerous flash crashes and problems and countless script errors. I've been using Firefox for years, and never had those problems before. Nothing else on my system changed, so it was definitely a Firefox problem.

One word of caution though - I was very tempted to either uninstall or reset the browser to see if that might help, until my brother tried that and ended up having the reformat his entire laptop because in deleting/clearing Firefox, it somehow managed to delete some of the computer's internet connectivity settings too.

Uh, well thanks for the heads up. Won't be doing that then.

Reformatting the hard disk is a Defcon One level last resort in case of major virus infestation or missing/corrupted Windows system files, so unless a virus caught through Firefox was causing the connectivity issue, that was probably super unnecessary.

If it's a common bug, it's Firefox issue and the best thing to do is uninstall it and install a previous stable version (not necessarily the one you had).

If it isn't, it may be a conflict with another program or a hardware issue (not enough ram or something).

I AM suspecting conflict with another program (possibly flash or java) but no idea how to fix that one either)

If it's that, updating java and/or flash may help (or may not, I had to stop updating flash because each new update messed something up, but I think that's not a common issue).

That's the thing...I updated them, too (so those are two potential culprits)

What operating system is your desktop using?

I've had some issues with Firefox in the past, but I keep coming back to it because I love the add-ons. Can't live without AdBlocker Plus.

You should be able to reset Firefox without compromising your internet access. I saw another anon advise against it, but I look after our company's computers on a daily basis and have never seen anyone lose internet access by resetting a browser UNLESS their system had a virus attached.

Not saying you have a virus; I'm saying you can reset your browser. Your browser goes on the internet, but it doesn't control your internet access - that's managed in your network adapter settings.

It's Windows 7, sorry, late reply.

You can try starting Firefox in safe mode to see if it's one of your addons that's causing this (many of them are probably out of date and need replacing if you've taken so long to upgrade). You can also try deleting all your Firefox profiles for a fresh start (make sure to backup your bookmarks first). Even when you uninstall and reinstall Firefox entirely, your profile data tends to remain, so if something's wrong in there, it could cause other issues.

Also, are you running 64 bit Windows? If so, you can trying installing Waterfox, which is basically a Firefox clone that replaces Firefox functionality on your system - your bookmarks, addons, settings, and so on, are accessible through Waterfox, so it looks and acts exactly like Firefox, just faster and more stable (for my 64 bit system, anyway).

Thanks, that's actually really useful! How do I see if it's one of the addons?

You got to "Menu > Help > Restart with addons disabled" to get Firefox to run clean. Browse like you normally do and if the crashing is gone, you'll know it's one of the addons. If it is, restart Firefox the regular way, go to "File > Addons", and disable-then-restart addons one by one, testing for crashing, until you narrow it down.

Waterfox. It's a firefox shell that nixes lots of the problems, IME.
