I think it depends on fandom, and of how you and where you participate in it, but in some places 25 can certainly be above the average age.

It's still so weird to me that we're considered 'old' by online multi standards. I don't believe I'm allowed the honor of considering myself old for at LEAST another twenty years.

My kneejerk reaction (which I thankfully did not succumb to) was to bellow, "WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER YOU SHOULD BE IN SCHOOL ARGHLEBARGHLE."
God help me, I am turning into a sitcom dad.

Much less awkward than, "I WOULD TOTALLY DO YOU." ...thank you, small girlchild?

Anyway, I agree with you about the average age varying by fandom/platform. I'm 25 and I often feel "old" relative to other users on Tumblr, which I deal with by finding groups of people my age and older and pretty much only following them.

Then I realize they are, literally, a messed up fifteen year old.
And then I realize that I was literally them when I started in online fandom.
And then I feel hopelessly displaced in time and like screaming "wait when did I become that person I thought was old and wise when I was on the internet back when?"
I am not under the delusion this is a unique feeling, mind, nor that it won't just get worse. But I still feel weird, old and displaced.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)"half of the httyd fandom after hearing httyd3 got pushed to 2018: i’ll be 20+ by then, i’ll be so old!!!!
the other half of the httyd fandom: wtf, how old are you fucking kids
another half of the httyd fandom: haha i won’t even be 20+ when the third film comes out!!
the other half of the httyd fandom: okay no seriously, how old are you fucking kids"
Yeah, too many halves, but you get the picture. (I'll be 33 for movie 3. I win)
