But in some spaces, they sort of are? I mean, sometimes I'm on tumblr, and I'm like "well fuck, that's a 14-year-old that just followed me".

I think it depends on fandom, and of how you and where you participate in it, but in some places 25 can certainly be above the average age.

Oh god I know. I've been friended by a few tiny baby multis in high school recently, and I'm just like, "YOU ARE SO TINY. HOW CAN THIS BE."

It's still so weird to me that we're considered 'old' by online multi standards. I don't believe I'm allowed the honor of considering myself old for at LEAST another twenty years.

With me it's mostly: kid, you probably shouldn't be reading my fanfic, or looking at the NSFW art I reblog, but I'm not our damn mother.

Oh god, I actually once got this DA teenager commenting on one of our system family portraits (I do one every once in a while to hang on our wall) to tell me how hot she thought I was and how she wanted to do me.

My kneejerk reaction (which I thankfully did not succumb to) was to bellow, "WHERE IS YOUR MOTHER YOU SHOULD BE IN SCHOOL ARGHLEBARGHLE."

God help me, I am turning into a sitcom dad.

This wasn't tumblr, but I once had this teen girl saying she wanted to be "just like me" when she grew up. (I was 26 then). It was a weird mix of being flattered and being really weirded out.

Gosh, we've had a bit of that too, since apparently being active on the Internet as multiple since '07 makes us an "old multiple," somehow. One system said we were one of their plural idols, and I just felt all flustered and humbled.

Much less awkward than, "I WOULD TOTALLY DO YOU." ...thank you, small girlchild?

I actually wonder what they're thinking when the do that...

Not very much, if you ask me.

Tumblr is full of teenagers, and I've seen more than a few instances of the "You're [25+] years old? Why are you even here you old creeper?!" mentality from them. I mean, there's nothing wrong with setting boundaries, such as asking that adults not follow your blog if you're a minor, but I'm annoyed by the implication that people in the mid-twenties on Tumblr are inherently predatory and should pack up and leave.

Anyway, I agree with you about the average age varying by fandom/platform. I'm 25 and I often feel "old" relative to other users on Tumblr, which I deal with by finding groups of people my age and older and pretty much only following them.

Thiiiis. I don't actually think I'm that old until I'm getting SERIOUSLY EXASPERATED with how this or that tumblr user won't stop fucking acting like they're a messed up fifteen year old - !

Then I realize they are, literally, a messed up fifteen year old.

And then I realize that I was literally them when I started in online fandom.

And then I feel hopelessly displaced in time and like screaming "wait when did I become that person I thought was old and wise when I was on the internet back when?"

I am not under the delusion this is a unique feeling, mind, nor that it won't just get worse. But I still feel weird, old and displaced.

There's a post going around HTTYD fandom on tumblr

"half of the httyd fandom after hearing httyd3 got pushed to 2018: i’ll be 20+ by then, i’ll be so old!!!!

the other half of the httyd fandom: wtf, how old are you fucking kids

another half of the httyd fandom: haha i won’t even be 20+ when the third film comes out!!

the other half of the httyd fandom: okay no seriously, how old are you fucking kids"

Yeah, too many halves, but you get the picture. (I'll be 33 for movie 3. I win)

There was a Tumblr post going round recently where some kid told someone off for being 30 and using the site because fandom is a 'safe space' for teens.
