I call myself old because I don't feel like I should be the age I am. I feel like my brain is much younger than my body.

It totally depends on what fandom they're in. If you're 28 and your main fandom is Game of Thrones, whatever. If you're 28 and your main fandom is Hannah Montana you might be a little old for that bro

I said that at that age, though it was partly ironic.

Anyway, at the time I also had quite a few younger fandom friends, so compared to them I kind of was old. (Although I also had online fandom friends in their forties and fifties.) I was in college, I had a job, things like that.

So I don't see the problem. It did make me laugh when I found an entry saying "I'm 21 today! I'm so old!", though - 21 seems fairly young to me now.

I'm 25, and agreed. (Not about the only making fandom friends of a certain age part, but the finding it insufferable when twenty-somethings act like they're so old.)

"Old" is often relative to the other members of the fandom. I'm pretty sure the average age of F!S users is somewhere between 24-27.

Some 25-somethings feel old, because they're no longer teenagers. They are now, very much, adults. Then they become thirty-somethings and realize how young their 20-something selves were. NOW they're old. Oh, forty-something, now? They was so young at 35!

And so on and so forth.

I only call myself old because I'm depressed by how little I've accomplished compared to what I wanted to do by this point in my life. I know I'm not really old though so I avoid saying it to other people.

But in some spaces, they sort of are? I mean, sometimes I'm on tumblr, and I'm like "well fuck, that's a 14-year-old that just followed me".

I think it depends on fandom, and of how you and where you participate in it, but in some places 25 can certainly be above the average age.

I am someone who has been perpetually feeling old since the age of 16. It's not about egoism. It's about mortality. Every year brings me one step further away from the innocence of childhood and one step closer to the grave.

But anyway, feeling old is relative. You're always older than someone else. You're always older than you used to be. Most people don't feel "so old" because they're egotistical, which honestly is a weird word to use because it doesn't make sense in context, but because life moves fast, and suddenly you look up and realize you're no longer the person you used to be.

While you're totally right, fandom is one of those things and 25 is kind of that age. I mean, fandom tends to be mostly teenagers and college students, at least it often seems that way, and I think 25 is probably that age when you realize you aren't the typical "college age" anymore, everyone is younger. There's a good chance you went to school, or wanted to go to school, but even after all of that you're still not where you thought you'd be as an "adult". the job's not there, if you even found a job in the field you studied. you don't feel like you've matured that much, but you start to get irritated by teenagers just because they're teenagers. you're halfway to 30 and protagonists in many if not most fandoms are younger than you, but you feel like you're in the same place you were five years ago, and you've gone on no cool adventures and don't have your shit together. and you found a white hair, even though you're still getting pimples.

...I mean, like, that's how a friend described it...

I'm 25 and people whining about being old when they aren't bothers me. I see people in their 30s saying they're "old" all the time, usually to explain why they don't know something. And then if I didn't know it, I feel like "am I old too, then?" Like they think all young people are popular culture encyclopedias. And sometimes they seem to be doing it to be dismissive, like they've encountered some idea they don't like, so they say "I can't understand that, I'm old!" to make it clear that whatever the idea is, it must just be some "young people thing." So obnoxious.

I don't want to be seen as "old" so I don't go around complaining about how old I am! And on the internet, that means no one thinks I'm old.

I call myself 'old' sometimes, half-jokingly. Because in some of my online/fandom circles, yes, I am older than the majority of members. Not necessarily in my close friend circles, but in the group overall, yes.

And I dunno, there's plenty of older fandom people I've come across who are obnoxious, immature, whiny-asses. And plenty of young ones who are amazing human beings. I don't think age by itself is a good cut-off criteria for whether or not to pursue a friendship.

I can understand how you feel but like, I was that way in my twenties, I used to complain how I was so old, but now that I'm in my thirties I roll my eyes at any of my friends still in their twenties who think they're old.

Fandom is funny though, most people tend to think of it as a teen thing but fandom actually skews much much older then that. I used to think I'd "grow out" of fandom when I was young, how naive I was.

I'm 35 and have been describing myself as "old" in fandom for years. It's 'cause I've learned if I don't say it, others will, and it takes some of the wind out of their sails.

There's a significant number of teens/early-20s who think they should have a monopoly on anything fannish (regardless of the target demographic of the original source material). Apparently if you're beyond typical student-age then you ought to be off doing something more worthwhile than being on the internet having opinions about TV shows or books or whatever. "Aren't you too old for this stuff", "you're meant to be grown up why don't you get a life" are things I've heard so many variants on over the years.

I mean I feel like there's a bigger difference between a 25 year old and a 15 year old, than a 25 year old and an 35 year old. So if you're in your twenty's in a fandom with a bunch of high schoolers it's going to be way more jarring than if you're in a fandom with other adults. And thusly constantly remind you how much older you are.

I follow this one girl on Tumblr for the fandom stuff she posts. For a long time, I thought she was pretty level-headed. She does do some SJ stuff but it's usually fairly balanced -- like shitting on white people isn't any cooler than shitting on POCs, etc.

But recently, she had her birthday (I think 20?) and she was so depressed. She has made some stuff about her depression before but never wall-to-wall stuff. But, she just honestly felt that she should've made something of her life by now -- that she had this idea of herself accomplishing something as a teenager and now that she's 20, she felt like she'd completely missed the opportunity and there was nothing to look forward to, etc.

She was so fucking serious too. She honestly felt like this and I was all O_o.

Since then, she's also posted some really naive stuff about fandom that doesn't take a nuanced approach (like how non-con/dub-con is rape and there is no excuse whatsoever to call it anything else and people who like it should reevaluate themselves, etc.)

For being so level-headed before, the whole thing is weird to me.

My age-related fandom laugh is the kids who blog about how they can't believe they're in love with so many "middle-aged" actors. Like Tom Hiddleston.

Heh. Speaking as someone who really is middle-aged (and double-digits older than Hiddles, which kind of puts a crimp in my crush) I giggle. And then sigh, because boy, some people really are YOUNG.

Enh, part of it for me is that the Internet just moves so FAST. The terminology and ideas behind some subcultures are constantly changing, and it doesn't take long to feel left behind. It's a weird feeling.

Thank god I hang around a bunch of old people offline so I can keep my sense of proportion.
