I call myself 'old' sometimes, half-jokingly. Because in some of my online/fandom circles, yes, I am older than the majority of members. Not necessarily in my close friend circles, but in the group overall, yes.

And I dunno, there's plenty of older fandom people I've come across who are obnoxious, immature, whiny-asses. And plenty of young ones who are amazing human beings. I don't think age by itself is a good cut-off criteria for whether or not to pursue a friendship.

The worst people I've ever met in my whole fandom life have been older (by which I mean 30+). A couple of them would have skirted by OP's rule, given that they were in the 30-35 bracket at the time, but age is most definitely not any indication whatsoever of maturity.

I agree that there are plenty of fans who've accumulated years but not the wisdom to go along with them. I've also met younger fans who are far beyond them in emotional maturity.

That said... I dislike people in their twenties etc. describing themselves as old because they're almost always being dismissive on the basis of mere chronological age. When you've personally experienced genuine, systemic ageism, it's just hard to find that as cute.

There are plenty of older fandomers who are complete and utter asshats, but they don't look at you like you're an alien or some pathetic loser to be pitied if you're older than the typical college age. Which can honestly be incredibly exhausting, and I can't blame OP for wanting to avoid it.

I'd imagine they have more criteria than just age anyway. It's not like "over 35" is really a narrow pool.
