I follow this one girl on Tumblr for the fandom stuff she posts. For a long time, I thought she was pretty level-headed. She does do some SJ stuff but it's usually fairly balanced -- like shitting on white people isn't any cooler than shitting on POCs, etc.

But recently, she had her birthday (I think 20?) and she was so depressed. She has made some stuff about her depression before but never wall-to-wall stuff. But, she just honestly felt that she should've made something of her life by now -- that she had this idea of herself accomplishing something as a teenager and now that she's 20, she felt like she'd completely missed the opportunity and there was nothing to look forward to, etc.

She was so fucking serious too. She honestly felt like this and I was all O_o.

Since then, she's also posted some really naive stuff about fandom that doesn't take a nuanced approach (like how non-con/dub-con is rape and there is no excuse whatsoever to call it anything else and people who like it should reevaluate themselves, etc.)

For being so level-headed before, the whole thing is weird to me.

Is that some kind of... Quarter-Life-Crisis?

Depression is weird. Trust me, it's a lot weirder to feel.

Twenty was hard for me, too. I felt like I should know what I wanted to do with my life, and I didn't. Thirty wasn't bad at all. And forty was just kind of funny.

Talk to me again in two years, though. Maybe fifty will really freak me out.

Haha, yes, I've had friends like that, too: "I'm 24 and still not a famous author yet my life is ooooooooover". Pointing out that a lot of authors are in their late thirties or older when they actually publish their first novel doesn't seem to help because so many people think they're going to be this wunderkind exception. I shrug and figure that in ten years, they'll be a little smarter and a little embarrassed about all the melodrama over this.

There's also a really big push for teens/college-aged kids to have their lives planned out these days. My brother's in high school, and he was supposed to have his entire school schedule planned out when he was in eighth grade. When you're looking at that, it can feel daunting if you're not sure what you're doing. (Personally, I just keep in mind that my mother's best friend quit her job when she was fifty, went back to school, and now teaches at an elementary school. You can always change your path.)
