I'm 35 and have been describing myself as "old" in fandom for years. It's 'cause I've learned if I don't say it, others will, and it takes some of the wind out of their sails.

There's a significant number of teens/early-20s who think they should have a monopoly on anything fannish (regardless of the target demographic of the original source material). Apparently if you're beyond typical student-age then you ought to be off doing something more worthwhile than being on the internet having opinions about TV shows or books or whatever. "Aren't you too old for this stuff", "you're meant to be grown up why don't you get a life" are things I've heard so many variants on over the years.

Also 35, also done exactly the same thing. And I'm not even in especially young-skewing fandoms. There have been times when I've felt like a particularly fascinating zoo exhibit.

I think the whole concept of "you're too old for this stuff" is something anyone of that age thinks, though. I remember being <20 (and not in fandom at all) and thinking my parents enjoying TV shows was embarrassing, or the traditional "OMG UR TOO OLD U JUST DON'T GET ME!" teenage rite of passage rant. I remember quite distinctly upsetting my mother intensely with that one when I was in high school.

Then you get to whatever age you think you're supposed to be too old for things, and realize no, fuck that, I'm going to like what I like (and maybe I was pretty stupid when I was younger in having that opinion in the first place, but then again having stupid opinionsis also the privilege of being young).
