I don't think you're a bigot but I don't think your position is anywhere close to reasonable.

And I do think that there's some sense in which you have at least a weak obligation to hold your tongue, viz common politeness.

I don't hate the PEOPLE though, I just hate their beliefs.

I have a dear friend who's Republican. And though I love him dearly and think his heart is in the right place, some of his stances on economics are fucking idiotic and, when he talks about them, I certainly don't just nod my head and agree.

It might not be moderate, but I think it's a fair stance. I'll respect a religious person, I'll respect their right to their beliefs and opinions. But I don't respect the beliefs themselves. I don't see anything wrong with that.

And of course it can be impolite. But it's certainly not racist.

I noticed how you're softening your language as you're responding. It's gone from "I HATE THESE IDEAS" to "I don't respect them"

So the question is, were you just venting and being a bit hyperbolic in your original post or are you now just backtracking?

Well it's true either way -- I both hate them and don't respect them.

I like moral philosophy but I despise the notion that people want to codify it into a system based on books that are hundreds or thousands of years old.

I think religions are by their nature disturbing. In Christianity, for example, I could never get over the fact that Hell exists. It's such a fucked up idea on a fundamental level to me.

If someone wants to believe in Christianity, that's their right. But I won't treat their beliefs as sacred because they're not sacred to me.

And I certainly don't appreciate being called a racist for saying that I hate religion.

I don't think you can compartmentalize hate like that. Hate is something the festers and grows. It starts of "hating the idea" and eventually grows into hating the person.

I think you should just learn to accept that some people believe differently than you do and that's okay.

I accept that people have different beliefs than me. My dad is very religious and I love him to death. But I still think his beliefs are stupid.

Like, honestly, that's like saying you can't hate Republican ideas because it would grow into "hating the person."

Sorry but I'm never going to stop hating the anti-gay marriage arguments. Not gonna happen.

Uh... what kind of argument is this? "You cannot hate anything about a person without hating the person themselves"?? This makes exactly zero sense.

Not OP, but I don't think it's possible to firmly hold to some beliefs and values without also holding that other beliefs and values are a Bad Thing(TM). The anon below mentions the anti-gay brigade--my beliefs pretty much obligate me to support mutual and equal love, so I'm not gonna be supportive of someone who helps to create an environment in which gay people kill themselves. I can think that someone who's anti-gay isn't a bad person and wants the best for everyone, but that doesn't make up for what their beliefs can do to gay people who have the misfortune to be raised like that.
