Why do people get so upset about Wendy's chili?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-28 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
A friend of mine posted a SHOCKING SECRETS ABOUT FOOD article on facebook a while back, and one of the things mentioned in it was Wendy's chili. It's made out of...leftover beef from the grill. I was kind of like, "...okay?" and moved on, but then, the other day, I happened to mention liking the chili. And someone said, "DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT'S THAT MADE OUT OF? LEFTOVER BEEF FROM THE GRILL!!!!!!!!" They were completely disgusted and aghast that I wasn't.

I don't understand. It's not dirty. It's not rancid. They cook hamburgers, and when bits fall off the burgers, instead of wasting them, they save them and put them in the chili. There's nothing disgusting about it. Like, hello. When you have one of their hamburgers, you are also eating beef that's been on the fucking grill. There is no difference, except one is "leftovers" and the other isn't. Do you not eat any leftovers at home? If you make or order too much food, do you just toss it all in the trash because "OH NO EWWWW LEFTOVERS THAT'S SO GROSS?"

I don't get it. I feel like people just think it's awful because they were primed to think it's awful by the shit they read about it in.

That is like one of the least gross fast food "behind the scenes" things I've heard.

People freak out about fast food all the time. It's really annoying and stupid and the only reason for it is misguided health crazes.

This is a big deal? If anything, it's good because you can say the beef is very thoroughly cooked?

Because people just want to complain.

You got it

People will complain about absolutely anything. It's stupid.

Enh, this is up there with the pearl-clutching over that video that shows if you boil soda, you get a gooey sludge.

Yes. Sugar carmelizes. That's how CANDY GETS MADE. It's not disgusting; it's mad science for hungry people!

Now, if the soda caught FIRE, THAT would be worth clutching your pearls over.

Yeah, exactly. I make toffee that way (butter+sugar, boil until it becomes a sludge, pour into a pan and let it set)

Yup! It's how our mother made sour cream candy! It's not gross; it's SCIENCE!

But Wendy's Chili is pretty tasty. :( Leftovers or not! Besides, don't people make stews and stuff out of leftover food anyway? I don't see how it's any different.

Leftover chili? Sounds like something I'd make at home.

Well... I'd make the chili, end up with far too much for 1-4 people to eat in one sitting, and leave the rest for later.

It's quite common to see a takeaway tub of leftover rice, potatoes or pasta in our fridge, especially when I've been cooking. If we order Chinese, we're guaranteed to end up with half of my rice and Thai green/red curry sauce in the fridge. Rice and mashed potato will usually end up in the frying pan the next day, though not at the same time.

Leftovers are perfectly fine, as long as they're stored properly in the intervening time (allow to cool for no more than half an hour, then place in the fridge in a sealed contained is my rule), and reheated correctly before eating.

I've worked at wendy's in the past, and can confrim this is true. I can also confirm that never once did a customer come back and say it made him sick/tasted rancid/etc. and it never stopped me from eating it.

We check to make sure there's no pink in the burgers before they even go on a bun. It's more cooked then that by the time it goes in the chilli, and otherwise it'd have to be thrown out.

I think it's because people like to fool themselves into thinking restaurant food prep is pristine and sanitized, but it's so not. They're even sillier to think that of fast food.

I think it's because people always want brand new food no matter what, which is silly when there's food that's perfectly good but leftover. We waste so much food, it actually makes me really happy to hear that Wendy's uses the bits that fall off. :D

As far as I remember, there are lots of foods that originated as a way to use up leftovers. (Pizza, I think, was among it).
