No, I get that. I think militant atheists that go and harass people on, say, religious online forums are dicks.

But I'm not going to treat your beliefs as sacred. To me, they're the equivalent of the anti-vaccine movement. I don't respect them and I think they're full of crap.

If you want to believe that, though, it's completely up to you. I just don't particularly appreciate being called racist because of it.

For what it's worth, I think militants of any flavor tend to be dicks.

It's your right to believe whatever you want, be that in God, the Flying Spaghetti Monster, or nothing. As long as you respect my right to believe whatever I want and don't harass me, we're golden.

but there's a significant difference between religious belief and anti-vaxx

(one of them is provably full of shit and harmful; one of them is arguably but not provably full of shit and harmful)

Whoa, whoa, whoa.

Bit of a difference there between the many people who just simply go about their day practicing their religion (which is often a hugely personal thing), and that asshole Andrew Wakefield.

Why are you getting called racist? What sparked that?

Charlie Hebdo discussion.

I said that Muslims have the right to be offended but people have the right to make fun of Islam.

Apparently this is racist.

Which pissed me right the fuck off because I'm ARAB. And NO. Making fun of Islam is NOT racism.

Okay but you realize that it's about more than just "making fun of Islam", right? France is one of the most virulently anti-Islamic countries in the EU, and they're not shy about it. The response to the Charlie Hebdo attack was one of extreme hatred towards Muslims-- I think it was something like 26 mosques were attacked just in the first couple of days? Like, with firebombs, grenades, severed pigs' heads.

So sure, yes...you're allowed to make fun of Islam. But doing so in that context is literally spitting in the face of those already downtrodden and in fear.

Whether or not it's racist is splitting hairs: it's an asshole thing to do.
