I'm puzzled by your comment about fanfic. Fanfic does involve roleplay in the sense of figuring out what a character would do, but... I don't know, I'm just being picky about word choice.

To be fair, most fanfic involving the Warden, Hawke or Inquisitor pretty much is of the embarrassing self-insert sort. I even read a fic that admitted it and used a picture of herself to advertise.

Which is not like, inherently bad if that's your thing, but I can see how that feels more like roleplaying "if I were in this world".

I can only read fic that uses default names and, in the case of Hawke, default appearances. It just feels slightly more legitimate to me then, but that might be an unusual preference, idk.

Nah, I'm the same. I'll read fic about Garrett or Marian Hawke just fine, but the minute someone starts talking about Joseph Hawke or Guinevere Hawke or Serenity Rosebud Hawke or whoever, my brain tries to autocorrect and the flow of the story is spoiled.

I just don't understand why people feel the need to use custom names in their fic in the first place. All the Dragon Age player characters have canon, unchangeable names. If you're writing about Princess Cousland, refer to her as Cousland! If you're writing about Serenity Rosebud Hawke, call her Hawke! If you're writing about Special Snowflake Trevelyan, call him Trevelyan! I'm at the point where I don't even like seeing "Marian" or "Garrett" uttered in fics, because no one calls them that in the game except maybe in a letter, depending on player choices. Maybe I'm just a picky bitch.

Oh god yeah. I really, really dislike reading about super customized Wardens/Hawkes/Inquisitors. I don't want to read about Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Hawke, I want to read about Garret and Marian. That's why I'm reading fanfiction about them. If I wanted to read about a pale delicate flower who blushes constantly and swoons into her hero's arms, I'd go to Wattpad.
