Well, I read Grayson and it's fun right now.

That said, that's just how it is. People online say things like character X or publisher Y have always been an asshole/sucked, unaware of how stupid they look when their always means the last 5 or 10 years.

Read Injustice. Most Fun Dc has ever let itself have in years.

Why yes this is Alfred Pennyworth headbutting Superman.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
God Injustice is terrible. Sometimes I wonder if the writers are just trolling.

Don't you see? That's exactly what they are doing! And it's wonderful!

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a problem when the trolling looks more or less like the nontrolling comics.

I admit it, Noodles, you've interested me purely because I think Alfred is awesome. Tell me he gets to be badass even more.

Beating up Superman is a stupid as hell way to make Alfred awesome though.

It's kinda a one shining moment thing but there's more to this scene and he doesn't stop being awesome afterwards. And the comic is an AU where they just said "Fuck it, all bets are off." it's the prequel to the video game but it's done so well it's still going all this time after the video game's release. It's definitely worth a look (you don't have to play the game as long as you understand it's a "one universe over" sort of thing at the start)

I have to wonder about the disconnect between all the people who post about how they want happiness in comics again, and all the comics writers who're putting out death and misery. Are the people who buy new comics not posting about how much they like them, or are the people who post about how much they hate new comics buying them anyway?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't that basically all comic fans talk about? I don't think I can even remember reading anything about DC that didn't turn in to bitching about how much better everything was before the reboot.

Fans were complaining about the grimdarkery well before the reboot, Anon. I was hearing kvetching about it back in 2007! But then again, I was in the JLI fandom, and there was an ongoing joke about how everyone in the JLI had TERRIBLE things happen to them.

(Ted, killed. Maxwell Lord, gone evil, kills Ted, then is killed himself. Ice, fridged. Fire... I think she was evil or something at that time? Rocket Red, killed. Sue and Elongated Man... let's not even go there.)

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Well sure, complaining and reminiscing about the past are what comic fans are best at. JLI fans are especially fond of doing so. Not that I am blame them (in fact, I'm one of them).

Remember how Booster's ongoing had like 3 separate arcs all dedicated to how much he missed Ted? It ended up being about 50% of the whole series, because JLI fans couldn't fucking let it go.

Blessings upon Jaime Reyes and his family, forever and ever, amen.

(I still have some of my old JLI scans, including the Kooey-Kooey-Kooey fiasco and the one about Sue Dibny kidnapping herself for her husband's birthday, knowing nothing would make him happier than a mystery to solve... only to realize he was onto her the entire time but didn't want to ruin her fun.)

Man JLI was the best.

It was cheesy, it was silly, I wasn't always into it, but I enjoyed its sheer goofy fun.

And I still have Booster Gold and Blue Beetle II action figures atop my stereo. They hang out with Juggernaut, Deadpool, and the Golem of Prague.

The Reyes family was the bestest!

I really wish I'd read more of Jaime's first series. It sounds so refreshing to not have angst about hiding the secret identity and the family being concerned but supportive.

Text: DC comics actually used to be fun and it makes me sad no one remembers it :(

Oh man, I so miss the Steph!Batgirl book and pre-reboot Jaime!Beetle. I also loved Red Robin, even if it was less relentlessly cheerful (the art was gorgeous).

And Batwoman. That one may still be running, and as I recall, it didn't change much right at the time of the reboot, but still.

Me too, OP--back in 1982 or so, before COIE.

The only DC thing I'm following atm is Multiversity but that's a nice balance of "cheesy fun" with "absolute terror" so far.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 06:13 pm (UTC)(link)
only DC stuff I read is hellblazer and jld - I'm used to misery (and I want it that way).

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Used to be/i>

That's the key part.

And given that DC wants to make sure that it only gets brought up so they can ruin it...

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
Given that the Batgirl panel is Cass hallucinating as she's dying about her best friend who was tortured to death with a power drill..."fun" seems a bit relative. I mean, don't get me wrong, I miss the relationships and the warmth of pre-reboot DC a hell of a lot, but there was plenty of grimdark foolishness there as well, it's just easier to focus on the best parts of it now that it's "gone."

Someday there'll be another reboot and most likely people will be picking out stray panels from current comics (aw! It's Damian hugging his father! It's Batgirl having fun! Remember Olive and Maps being buddies before the reboot made Olive a serial killer?) and remembering the good times...
