Uhura gets a lot of unjustified hate, but quite frankly, I don't think it's due to racism or sexism. Because ever since I've gotten into MCU fandom I've noticed there's a subset of Steve/Tony shippers that really likes to crap on Bucky. They'll write him as an asshole, minimize his relationship with Steve, set him as an obstacle to Tony and Steve getting together. That probably sounds familiar to a lot of Uhura fans, I'm guessing.

But Bucky is a white male. And he's not even involved in a canon romance with Steve (which is what makes it especially ridiculous). It's just that Steve/Bucky is the first ship to really challenge Steve/Tony in terms of popularity -- so the insecure shippers bash him.

Now is there some misogyny and racism directed at Uhura? Yes (people who make vicious comments about her looks or who call her slurs for example). But, on the whole, I don't think the hate directed at her is really due to her being black or a woman.

It's just that she's getting in the way of a preferred ship. Which is immature behavior on the part of those shippers to be sure, but shippers of all stripes seem to go down that route unfortunately.

you got a point but I think it's kind of naive to pretend that her being a woman and a black woman doesn't make it even worse for her.
Like you said, if people hate even on the male characters when they get in the way of their ship, it figures how much hate a woc will get in fandoms like star trek.

My point isn't that she doesn't get hated on (sadly…that is NOT the case). Just that I don't think that, for the vast majority of her haters, it's motivated by the fact that she's a woman or black. If she were still a hugely prominent character and had largely the same role as she did in the new films but was dating McCoy instead, I think the Kirk/Spock fans wouldn't hate on her.

I don't think they dislike her for being black or a woman, but rather just for being in the way of Kirk/Spock. It's immature, but I don't think the hatred is based on bigotry any more than it is on the part of Steve/Tony fans who hate on Bucky.
