"Maybe I hang around in different fandom circles than you, but I see more "GAH, Uhura is supposed to be this awesome character but the writers fucked her up!*" than anything else."

yeah, they 'fucked her up' because they made her awesome and put her in a relationship and gave her more screentime and possibility of character development in two movies than the other writers did in the whole star trek franchise. Shame.
They think it was better when she was a background character and the most groundbreaking thing was just her being there, and her kissing Kirk against her free will was the only acceptable way she could have a 'romance'.

Really? You thought it would be a good idea to have her insist on discussing her relationship with Spock during a life-or-death mission, in the presence of their CO?

it's stupid that people keep harping on that one Uhura's scene when in the same movies the male characters were worse and no one cares about that. Just because she's a woman and her relationship with Spock isn't friendship like the one between him and Kirk, it doesn't mean that, by default, her arguing with her boyfriend is more unprofessional or useless for the plot than a guy (the captain!) arguing with his friends all the time. With all due respect but if you were looking for characters that act professionally all the time you chose the wrong movies.
Honestly, I understand her reasons for being angry with Spock more than Kirk's complains that Spock was not human.
