This. Also, the movie is definitely targeting a specific demographic. It helps if you were the kind of kid that 1) had a lot of dolls/stuffed animals/etc. that you possibly spent a lot of time acting out complicated stories with, and 2)spent a lot of time anthropomorphizing your toys (see: Did The Velveteen Rabbit make you concerned about your toys' feelings). It's also somewhat easy to relate to Woody if you were an older sibling who felt like you got knocked off the favored child pedestal by a shiny new baby.

There are still things to enjoy about the movie if none of this applies to you, but the movie is geared to resonate with those people, and does with moderate success. (Nothing's going to work for everybody)

I don't know. I was a kid that loved my toys and acted out complicated stories with them, and anthropomorphized them, and I never cared for Toy Story.

Marketing is never going to reach everyone in the target demo, but theoretically, at least, you'd have more to relate to in Toy Story than the pragmatic kids who preferred sports and other games to make-believe. I preferred The Christmas Toy, personally, which is a Jim Henson special from the 80s that IMO did a better job of covering most of the same themes that Disney ripped off.
