Re: Weird encounters

This didn't happen to me but I witnessed it. I went to a local department store and I was at the checkout paying for my stuff. There was an employee nearby folding stuff -- she looked maybe 17 years old.

This well-dressed older gentleman comes up to her and asks if she's from Nigeria (I think? I don't remember which country it was exactly). She says no, not making eye contact, clearly not wanting to talk about it. He then starts talking to her in another language, like she should understand. He then goes back to English and asks if she's from some other country. She says she was born in America. He goes back to asking her questions in some other language.

She's clearly so uncomfortable and he just wouldn't let it go. He's asking her about her thoughts on a war going on in Africa and stuff like that, and she's clearly trying to get him to move on without outright saying it. I finished my transaction before I saw how it ended. It had a very creepy vibe though.

That's so weird. Not sure what I would've done. Would it have been a bad idea to try finding a manager or something?

What's even weirder was that there WAS a manager (or looked like a manager) around. I don't remember if he was there when the guy was there but I remember he was there when I first got to the checkout counter. The other employee looked a little uncomfortable too but this was a big-box place so not the close-knit employees of a smaller store. She wasn't going to intervene either.

It was really awkward all around.

AYRT - Oh. Well, hopefully if it continued she did, though some stores also have a policy of not kicking people out no matter what, pretty much. :/

Yeah, that's even weirder...

Oh god, that sounds like my grandfather.

He's a baby boomer, got to travel to a lot of Asian countries because he's pretty rich. Knows Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian, etc.

He's also a complete narcissist. He just loves attention, and being the 'expert' and stuff.

So one day, we're sitting in an Indian restaurant, and he starts speaking to the server in Chinese. (Like: "Look at me! I'll speak to the natives in their language!") And she just looks at him dead in the eye and goes: "I'm Australian."

Fuck me, it was so embarassing. I could have died. But he deserved it, really.

I tried showing off how I can speak Japanese in a sushi restaurant once and the waitress was all "I'm Korean, I have no idea what you just said." I was sufficiently embarrassed not to do that again.
