If you are on the US, put your phone number on the Do Not Call registry. Then, when a telemarketer calls, say, "We are on the Do Not Call registry, our ID number for it is [your telephone number]. Please put us on your do not call list." This usually helps more than just hanging up.

However, if a telemarketer objects and/or says something to the effect of "we've done business with you before" and they didn't they are LYING, trying to take advantage of what is called an "earlier business relationship exemption." If you are on the DNCR, report these callers to the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau!
