Informal poll: hanging up on telemarketers

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
When you're at home and someone cold calls you, what do you do? I usually just hang up. I'm not rude, I don't curse them out, I just don't speak to them. I imagine it is a sucky, horrible job, and I don't really think they need to abused because it's the work they have. But just because the company you work for somehow got a hold of my phone number, that doesn't mean you deserve any of my time.

I hang up. I mean, why waste my time AND their time?

I hang up. They have nothing to offer me, so why bother wasting their time?

Plus, I don't have many minutes. I ain't wasting them on some cold call crap trying to tell me I've won a trip to Cancun.

I rarely answer my phone unless I recognize the number, so I mostly miss the telemarketer calls.

I've actually heard that just means they'll call again. So I'll politely say something like, "I realize you have to call, but I'm not interested. Thank you."

I either hang up or tell them I'm not interested. I don't get many these days luckily.

It's good you're not rude, I suppose hanging up is not a bad solution. But you're probably better off just saying quickly, "sorry, I'm not interested, can you take me off your list please?" A bit more polite, and useful since they (should) delete you from their calling list.

I hang up. I also hang up when my alma mater calls and begs for donations. Hang up on that noise. You don't need it.

As someone who used to have that job, I just talk to them and say that I am not interested, lately cable companies have been calling me and I just tell them "sorry no TV, got 3 different streaming based sites I use for my television needs" and they stop calling me, one by one. That is the trick I learnt when I had the job: If you answer and say no they take you of the list, if you hang up you will be put back on the list and get called back the next day/week/month until the end of time.

I don't really get them much. I do surveys if in the mood, but if they're selling I say not interested and hang up.

That being said, I rarely pick up the home phone, because it's never for me. People who call for me do so on my cell, and that number is not listed.

Re: Informal poll: hanging up on telemarketers

I don't work in telemarketing, but I do work for a company that does surveys and polls over the phone. So sort of the same thing, except that we don't sell you anything.

Anyways, just hanging up without saying anything when we call you will just mean that you get called up again, as either the computer who does the actual calling (we interviewers don't dial manually) will automatically register that you didn't pick up, or we as interviewers will register that we didn't actually speak to you. Either way, your number is not registered as "declined" so we'll try to get in touch with you again.

So, with us at least, it's much better to say "No thank you, not interested" then hang up, and you'll be out of our system (for that survey at least, number gets randomly picked out). I don't know if this works with other companies though, but I have never gotten called up again when doing that myself.

I say, "I'm not interested, and will never be interested, so please take me off your call list."

For the fake "Microsoft Technical Department" phishers who are trying to get you to go to a website and buy wahtever, I play along and pretend to be really dumb for a good 5 minutes or so, and then I say, as if to someone sitting next to me, "Did the trace finish?" and then I say, "Ha ha, guys, we've traced this call. Goodbye."

Soemtimes, when they ask and start trolling for demographic info, I tell them that they ahve reached a ten-thousand year old genderless angelic being with four sets of wings and no disposible income... and then I hang up.

If you are on the US, put your phone number on the Do Not Call registry. Then, when a telemarketer calls, say, "We are on the Do Not Call registry, our ID number for it is [your telephone number]. Please put us on your do not call list." This usually helps more than just hanging up.

However, if a telemarketer objects and/or says something to the effect of "we've done business with you before" and they didn't they are LYING, trying to take advantage of what is called an "earlier business relationship exemption." If you are on the DNCR, report these callers to the Federal Trade Commission and the Better Business Bureau!

I've done everything from just not answering, asking to be taken off their call list (which in my experience doesn't always work) and hanging up without saying anything.

From a former telemarketer

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-01-30 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
If you're going to hang up please, PLEASE just hang up immediately. Please.

You make their jobs so much easier by just hanging up the second they start into that script because time is money and the amount of calls you can make in a day increases the probability that someone is actually looking for that subscription or business deal they're offering.

It's not a fun job in the first place, and it's really for everyone's benefit if you just say "not interested" and put the phone down.

I'll usually tell them straight away that I'm not interested, not in a rude way because it's not their fault that their computer system generated my number but I make sure to let them know that they wont get a sale out of me so that they wont waste my and their time.

My mother unplugs her phone around the time they usually call. She figures they'll assume the number's not in service and never call back.

I'm terrible at answering the phone, but if I do and it's a telemarketer it all depends on what they're selling.

If it's someone I've had business with (I got a free three months of Sirius XM when I bought my new car last year so they called when it was about to expire) I'll hear them out because it could be something I'm interested in.

If it's a survey and it's something relevant (my area's hydro provider called me today) I don't mind doing the survey provided I'm not busy.

If it's someone random and I have no interest, I'll wait until they've explained who they are and then just thank them for their time but tell them I'm not interested. I've never asked someone to put me on a do not call list because I've never actually had a company call a second time after I tell them I'm not interested.

It's not the most liked job, but it doesn't hurt me to be polite to someone who's just making a living provided they're not being rude to me.

"I'm not interested, thank you. Goodbye." Seriously why is this so difficult?

Re: Informal poll: hanging up on telemarketers

Usually I just hang up, but a while ago I kept getting called by the same number repeatedly (I answered the first time and then hung up when I realized it was a telemarketer, and then immediately the phone rang again). I ignored it but they just kept calling and it freaked me out a little, so when they called again, I answered and told them to stop calling. But it didn't stop, so I just turned the ringer off for a while.

If it's not a phone number I recognize, I let it ring. My dad refuses to get a separate phone number for his fax machine (yes, he still uses it LOL) so by the fourth ring the fax machine intercepts, thus forcing the caller to hang up. On my cell phone, I don't pick up. On the few occurrences that I do end up picking up, I just hang up. No need to waste time.

Interrupt them to say not interested, then hang up.

We've been getting more of those around here than usual due to the state election. All of them have been automated recordings. They should stop now since tomorrow is voting day.

I politely tell them I'm not interested and that's the end of it.

I cut in, say "thank you, but I'm ending this call now," and hang up gently.

Also, since I don't have call display on my phone, when it rings I pick up and say hello-- but if no one answers right away I assume it's an auto-dialer and hang up. I've never had a friend tell me I hung up on them, so I figure I'm mostly getting telemarketers.
