I still can't believe that of all the mega attractive characters in DA:I, the guy who looks like he was made in the Oblivion character creator is the one with legions of screaming fangirls.

I don't understand why so many girls are in love with Cullen "mages aren't people" Rutherford, but at least he's physically attractive.

I for one find Cullen awesome because he grows OUT OF the "mages aren't people" crap. Hell even in the first game if you're a female mage he has a thing for you so clearly his "MAGE SUCK" viewpoint just happened as a result of the horrors he had to witness during Origins. Kind of understandable. But he remains honorable and isn't okay with how Meredith handles the mage problem in DA2, and in DA:I he's cautious with Mages (WHICH IS A VALID THING TO FEEL) but hardly against them. His character growth is awesome and I think that's one of the things that draws the fangirls to him. As far as his looks, he's decent-looking but Dragon Age has a decently wide variety of attractive people that DON'T all look cookie-cutter Hollywood hot. So yeah, Solas looks a bit odd. Cullen is rugged but hardly perfect. Blackwall, Iron Bull, even Dorian aren't exactly models. But their romances are still interesting and that's awesome.

I felt the opposite about him during DA:O and DA:2 - found him a creepy stalker in the first when I went with a woman mage (too much power imbalance) and in second he's an opportunist (that is how I see him, so it's okay). Eh, still didn't play DA:I as of slow internet connection and no download :<, can't comment on that, but I hope he grows out of his discriminatory and creepy ways (not romance wise, can't for the life of me play straight characters).

Girls love Cullen because he's not a liar, or a spy, or someone who asserts that they "know what you want". Solas is a liar, leaves the Inquisitor without explanation, and is a condescending prick a lot of the time. Blackwall misleads the Inquisitor (and continues to mislead them even when their relationship is serious enough to become sexual), and Iron Bull is a spy for a religion that would basically enslave everyone if they could (not to mention the whole BDSM thing, which some people just don't care fore). Cullen, on the other hand, is up front about what he did, is honest and respectful of the Inquisitor, and is basically just a cute puppy in love. I really disliked his character before DAI, but for my straight female characters, he's pretty much their go to romance.

Because he's the only male love interest who has a power dynamic of equality with the Inquisitor, instead of being condescending to her (Solas), sexually dominating her (Iron Bull), or putting her on a pedestal and groveling at her feet (Blackwall...until you have sex and then of course he takes charge)?

I actually wanted to dislike him for his looks (ugh that design and I hate baldness). But he grew on me - I blame his voice actor (the guy who played Ianto on Torchwood btw.). But he is an asshole. Like almost everyone in your party, but still. I think the reason he is so popular is because the people who choose the female elf origin tend to create the biggest sue characters and have a weakness for the "redeem the asshole" trope - like they have with Loki.

I still don't think he's the villain. Not because omg I'm in love, or woobie, etc. I don't even think Solas is the good guy. I think he's going to be a very very big gray character. I think, judging by the mythos and his backstory, that he fucked up big and him waking up has been followed by him trying to un-fuck everything. I think what happened with Mythal will end up being a part of that. IDK, I'm not in the fandom, but I've seen a lot of Solas' fans and how much they seem to be in love with him. I liked his romance story, it definitely made things interesting... but mostly I think the ending left it open for him to play a huge part in what's coming, but I don't think he's the bad guy NOR do I think he's the GOOD guy, really. He's not a good person, but... I don't think he's a villain or a bad one, either. Just complex. Which tbh surprised me because up until the reveal I thought he was the most boring companion (which now I realize was probably done on purpose... and here I was questioning Bioware's character writing... my bad)

Even if he is a gray character, he is still responsible for the events of DAI. He is the reason the Conclave exploded, the Divine died, and the Inquisitor is forced into their role. He has so much blood on his hands, and fandom just does not give a fuck about it at all.

I feel similarly about him regarding good and bad. I don't think he fits into either category, and I could see him helping or hindering things in the future, depending on circumstances. He's a bit unpredictable.

I'm not sure why anyone would want to wobbify him... He's fascinating as is. The reveal still makes me giddy; well played, BioWare.

(As for Blackwall, Dragon Age is full of people who do awful shit on a regular basis. I was able to forgive Blackwall pretty easily.)

I agree with all of this. I think he fucked up and is trying to make up for his mistakes and ends up making other mistakes in the process.

I'm not in the fandom, I'm a grown-assed woman of 37 and don't read fanfiction or Tumblr or lust after videogame characters. I just think he's a very interesting, well-written character and am interested in seeing where Bioware goes with him.

(also as of latest comic it is now my headcanon that Riddick loves RPG's as much as Vin Diesel and the Necrons tried to usurp him just so they wouldn't have to lose every friday night to that shit anymore via royal decree)

OMG no. :( I was going to romance him on my second playthrough because he's my favourite companion so far (doing the "In your heart shall burn" quest right now). Guess I'll not want that after I finished my first playthrough. Ugh... I'd start over and get me an elf to do the romance now before I found out but I already put 25 hours into this game (yes, I spent a lot of time doing sidequests everywhere and almost stopped playing because the hinterlands are so boring, but then didn't and now the game is awesome again...)

Text: I find the way fandom excuses solas’s behavior really off-putting. when other characters do similarly questionable things or present similarly problematic views, they’re dragged through the mud but with solas, it’s just excuses upon excuses upon excused (with a healthy dose of denial). for example, the fandom loves to hate on blackwall for lying to you and deceiving you about his identity, but the difference is, blackwall is genuinely sorry and tries to atone for his past. but solas? not only does he lie to you, repeatedly, for the entire game, he never actually owns up to his mistakes and continues to deceive you until the very end. it’s only in the post-credits scene that we get to know his true identity. (and I’m not even going to touch his racism, sense of superiority, blatant hypocrisy and the entire thing with mythal.)

I will be brutally honest and say that I don't like him simply because I don't like his looks. But then I haven't played the game yet and I am willing to accept that maybe he's an interesting character in play, but I don't think I will have the drive to actually romance him when I am able to play.

Solas is such a prick. Every time he and my Lavellan are having a seemingly civil conversation he will say something condescending or incredibly rude about the Dalish, and then she and I both want to smack him again |:

Yeahhh. I liked him okay at first, since my original playthrough was as a (human) mage and we talked about the Fade a lot, so he liked me well enough. But after watching the way he treats a Qunari Inquisitor... hooooly shit this guy is so fucking racist. Even if he likes you, you're just "a credit to your race" or whatever, and if he disagrees with your choices, you're a thug and an ox and you've proved his assumptions right.

There's nothing wrong with liking Solas; he's a really interesting character, and apparently his romance is really well-written (haven't gotten to my elf lady yet so I can't confirm). But there's a difference between liking a character and trying to justify their gross-ass behavior. The worst is when people say "oh, he's been marginalized and mistreated as an elf, so it's understandable that he's this way". ... No. No. No.
