I definitely run with the headcanon that he's closeted as fuck (his Social Link sure seems to indicate that), but I understand what you mean. His reactions to Kanji especially are hard to watch, and it is off-putting. But I think it's okay to realize that he is a teenager, thus apt to be a bit...oblivious? I like to believe that by the end, he's started to grow out of those hair-trigger gay panic reflexes of his. Who knows where they really came from.
